First off, I want to start this post with an 'Arrrggggggg!!!!!!'. Much better. I have an Inspiron 8600 from Dell. The machine is awesome, I have never had a laptop that ran so fast. It is the perfect machine for a consultant who has to travel to the client site, but still come home and dock that machine to work. So what is the issue? Well you remember I said I get to come home and dock the machine. Well in October, right before a trip to Redmond, my machine decided that it didn't ever want to be away from it's dock and did not boot unless it was docked. I would receive the friendly error:

The computer is docked and only battery power is detected.
This can happen if the power adapter is unplugged,
or the computer is not properly connected to the
docking station.

Joy oh joy, that experience was fun. The solution after making one tech cry and another hangup on me, I got a tech to send me a box to send the machine back to them and they replaced the system board. TEN DAYS Later, they shipped the machine with new board and everything was good again.

Fastforward to today. I have plans to be onsite with a client tomorrow. I have pulled my VPC on the machine and decided to watch a movie with my wife while I finish up some extra work. I disconnect the machine from the docking station and proceed to go downstairs. Once I arrive, I boot up the machine to get my lovely error message again. You got to be kidding me, one month after spending 13 days without a laptop (3 days to arrive last time) I have to do this process all over again. S#IT!!!!!! So I get Dell back on the phone, and one hour after disconnecting the machine from the docking station and plugging it in with every possible scenario, they want me to send my machine back to them for another "10 or so days", so they can replace the system board again. This time is different though they kept telling me, because they are going to look at the docking station too. Ohhhhhhhh, the docking station is what I said. I told them to send me a limp along machine so I can WORK, but Dell doesn't do that for customers. So I will ship them my machine once more. They will replace the system board and I will blog to you again on January 9th about my machine crashing. I am calling them tonight again to see if it's possible to have them extend the warranty for a little longer to ensure this doesn't happen again. Probably have no luck, but it is worth a try.

The moral of the story is, stay away from the Inspiron 8600 and Latitude m60 (same board) if you plan to dock, because you will probably get a crappy machine and will only have it for 20 days of each month, but Dell won't care. You think after they replace the $700 system board twice, it might be cheaper to just send a new machine for the long haul.

watch out for Dell scaming their customers. They send a 2.50
check to you and you might think it's part of your rebate. A
couple months later you get a bill for 89.99 for some credit
card protection service-- slezy to make money off you and
run by their Dell financial services div.

got that same problem and i flashed the bios to version A12 to no avail.... i dont know what to do as well. i tried every possible scenario. the problem will only appear if im using just the battery. strange isn't it? the computer can boot to the desktop if im using an ac adapter or using a docking station with ac adapter.

The only thing that worked for me was a Motherboard replacement. Once done, I am only suggest cold-docking (no power when docked) from here on out.

is dell even aware of this issue? tech support of dell can not even determine what is the cause of this issue.

They treated it like they do everything. Does restarting fix it? No. Send it in and we will replace the hardware.

Uh oh.... I was just about to order a docking station for my newly acquired 8600 Inspiron.... and then I read these posts. Is this a seemingly universal problem with all 8600's?
Is this (the docking station) a move I should not make? I don't want to be sending this computer in for service every time I turn around! Anyone familiar with this problem.... please email me your thoughts at srh749@yahoo.com.
Thanks!

Read responses closely. It's a motherboard issue. Not a "dock" problem. Bios rev or reset does not fix it. This exact problem also happens on the Dell Latitude D800.

Motherboard replacement is needed. It does fix it. There is nothing in this thread which says a motherboard replacement fails.

same is happening to my 8600, will onky restart from standby,or hibernation, or reboot away from the docking station if I use the 90W dock adapter....ienot on battery or the 65W adapter.

has the problem been sorted for you.

my problem occured after updating the NVIDIA drivers from Dell and running Dell Quickset....p'haps a coincidence...have removed both thru control panel to no avail.

Hi

We have had 2 customers this month, both had a Dell Inspiron 8600 with exact problems (Battery does not charge at all and it does not start with just the charger) , I was going to suggest to them to buy a docking station so it might fix their problem but obviously they be wasting their money.

They have called DELL and they were asked to send the laptop to them + $120 just to look at it... Possibly they will sell them a new motherboard for what $200 or more + labor cost, god knows how much it will cost them at the end.

We use to recommend Dell products to our customers but last few weeks we have see too many dodgy dell products.... including printers and PC's.

We strongly recommend to people if they are buying dell they should pay the extra for the extended warranty its worth it at the end :)

Cheers

I have had my inspiron 8500 system board replaced three times in a 4 month period. I finally lost it and they sent me the 8600. Two months after receiving the 8600, I had to have the system board replaced again. I just want my money back.. I'm no computer geek, but I travel a lot and it was easier to keep my notes and inventory organized, but they have it, more that I do. I was smart enough to get the extended warranty, but the aggravation, outweighs the benefits..

My wife has had a similar problem with her 8600. A month ago (only weeks after warranty expired), while running it on AC, it just shut off, saying the battery was critically low... Looking at the adapter, she noticed the little green light was off indicating it wasn't drawing power. The machine wouldn't restart. She ordered a new adapter from Dell, and it worked for a month... then today the same thing happened. No power, no boot, no nothing. Has anyone achieved a permanent fix for this, preferably one that doesn't involve shipping the thing to Dell?

God do i ever hate Dell. I've also had battery problems with my Dell which I attributed to the AC adapter. Then after ordering three new ones (one actually melted) and still the same problem I decided to bring it to a repair shop (figured it might be the DC Jack on the motherboard which could be replaced for 50 bucks). Unfortunately the part could never be found and even if it could it would cost well over 600, or 800-1000 to replace the entire board. I've now been without my laptop for 6 weeks, don't ever buy a Dell, even with the extended warranty its not worth it.

Hey, I've had my 8600 since November 2003. It's weird because the problem I am facing is EXACTLY opposite of the one described by the original author.

Recently, when I boot up my computer (doesn't matter if it's a warm or cold boot, or reboot) the DELL screen appears, with the white POST progress bar. The progress bar seems to go to 100% and then it just stalls.

The computer makes no sounds, nothing. Pressing F2 for the BIOS setup does not work nor F12. This has happened nearly 30 times now, and the problem DOES NOT HAPPEN when the computer is NOT DOCKED. It only happens when it is docked in my Advanced Port Replicator. I have had the APR swapped already to no avail.

As well, on some occasions, it will boot past POST, and then the sometimes the WINDOWS splash screen will appear, and then the screen goes black, and only a white cursor at the top left of the screen appears, and it just hangs. I've left the computer on for half an hour, and nothing happens.

Currently I am getting my motherboard replaced. I hope it works. ANYONE else having the same problem??? Would love to hear if it's just me.

Anyways, here's my configuration:

Dell 8600
15.4" LCD +UXGA 1650x1050
Pentium M 1.7Ghz
2x512MB DDR RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5650go
60GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
NEC 4X DVD+RW
Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0
Secondary Monitor: Dell UltraSharp 2405fpw
External Hard Drive: Lacie 160GB d2 Triple Interface (Connected through Firewire 400 using 6-4pin cable)

Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

James

Well I just talked to Dell and it looks like I'm sending mine back as soon as my semester is over. I bought mine i 2003 so mine is in the same time frame as well. I really worried about this as I do a lot of traveling with my laptop. I can see a big battle bruing. This totally sux because I love the laptop, everything works great. Now I"m not sure if I should just sell it after they fix it since it seems to be a recurring problem.

Dell Latitude D800 - same issue as the original poster - will not boot without an AC adapter or docking station. In BIOS (A12), it says the docking state is UNDOCKED, yet when booting up, the system thinks it is still docked and running on batterries.

Even attaching the AC adapter doesn't get rid of all problems; once booted into XP (remember, this is off the docking station, running on 90W adapter), the integrated NIC will not connect to the network. Have to use a wireless card or PCCard NIC to connect. But connect to the docking station, and once again the NIC is operating.

Definitely something not right with the m/b. Shame too - worked great for a year, then this.

I work in IT, and Dell Support was terribly rude, treating me as if I was totally clueless about my system. Trying to contact corporate support instead.

Dell Inspiron 8500. I've got the same problem as well. The computer won't start without the AC adapter or the Docking station. I've previously had the same problem 2x within the last 5 months. The other times they sent a technician to replace the motherboard and then it work for 2-3 months before it broke again.

Now they say I should just carry my APR or power cord around. I explained to them that that was not the reason I bought a labtop. I bought a labtop so that I could use the computer without having to be plugged in all the time. So they said I had to buy a new battery because batteries aren't covered after 1 year. I explained that I didn't want to buy a new battery and have that not fix the problem but tech had no response to that.

Anybody find a fix that worked?

Hey people. I just spent half of my day on the phone with Dell, explaining what i think a lot of you are dealing with but probably don't even know. This might take awhile to explain but bear with me and read it, because it might be pertinent to your situation. READ ON>>>>>>>>>>>>

My girlfriend got an Inspiron 8600 in December of 2003. It ran fine for about 6-7 months at which time the AC Adapter went bad (DP/N: 5U092, 19.5V/3.34A/65W). I bought her a replacement on ebay, same part number (we probably could have gotten one under warranty, but oh well). She then realized after getting the replacement adapter that the battery would no longer charge, not only that but Windows didn't even recognize that a battery was there. So she pressed on without a battery, just plugging the adapter into the wall when she wanted to use the computer. 2 months after I bought her replacement adapter a drink was spilled into the keyboard, frying the system. Dell wanted $800 to fix it, she said screw that and came to accept a life without her laptop.

Fast forward until about 3 weeks ago, when I started pestering her about when she was getting her computer fixed. She didn't want to pay Dell $800, so I said "what the hell, I know a thing or 2 about computers, I will fix it for you" (figuring I could buy replacement parts on Ebay). So I started taking apart her computer, looking at the components, and this is when I made the BREAKTHROUGH!!!!!!!

I SUGGEST THAT ALL OF YOU WHO ARE HAVING ISSUES DO THIS: look at the bottom sticker, the one with the DELL logo, www.dell.com, FOR USE WITH ADAPTER PA-10 or PA-12. Look at the amperage requirement. The label on my girlfriend's computer says 4.62A. Her Inspiron 8600 requires 4.62A in order to properly function. A 4.62A requirement equates to 90W of power. Now compare the amperage rating on your computer to the Output amperage rating on your AC Adapter. The adapter that Dell shipped with this computer WAS ONLY 3.34A, and 65W. DELL SENT THE WRONG AC ADAPTER!!! This explains why the first adapter went bad, why the battery went bad, and probably why a lot of you are having the same problems. The adapter is not providing enough power to the computer, and in the meantime the computer is trying to pull that power from the adapter, straining it to the point of destruction.

If you have Dell Part Number 5U092, the 3.34A 65W adapter (the same one that came with my girlfriend's 8600), check your computer to see if it requires 4.62A (the 90W adapter). I found 2 Dell AC adapters that output 4.62A: P/N: 7W104 and P/N: 9T215. Maybe one of these adapters is what you need.

So after spending hours on the phone explaining the situation and escalating to supervisors and talking to complete idiots, I was able to score a new adapter, the CORRECT one (4.62A) AND a new battery. One major obstacle I encountered was that Dell Technical Support thinks the 3.34A adapter works with this model, even though it says right on the computer that it needs 4.62A. So whatever documentation the Dell Tech Support people have is wrong. There may be some Inspiron 8600s that only require 3.34A, but not mine.

I told the supervisor that this was a very serious issue, many people are experiencing this, and this is the kind of thing that results in class-action lawsuits. She said she would pass the information along to management, so cross your fingers for some sort of recall in the near future.

I encourage all of you having these adapter/battery/power issues to contact Dell and make a fuss. They need to know the severity of this situation. Not only that but they are telling some of you to replace the motherboard, etc. when in fact the whole thing could be solved simply by replacing the adapter.

Good luck, I'm interested to hear about some of your other experiences!

Having the problem of battery not charging for a long time now. After Darrin's comment on the power adapter, checked to find that there was mismatch in the power requirement of the adapter and the system.
Thanks Darrin.
I did call up the dell people, they refuse to accept the issue. The only solution they give is "Replace the motherboard". It seems like a slogan and a fix for all issues on 8600.
They should just recall the whole 8600 series, if it has basic problems like power supply mismatch. It is a beautiful system, I really like it, but issues as minor as power supply mismatch is a breach of trust from Dell.
The dell customer support also stated that they supplied the 3.34W power supply for the docking station. It seems like a ridiculous statement to make, since the monitor of the 8600 is really big compared to other laptops, why will someone use a docking station & monitor with 8600 ?
I am just out of the guarantee period, so I could not convience them to fix this issue in my system. I really hope that my system is not fried by the continous use of the wrong power supply.
The dell guys deserve to face a law suit ?

My company purchased an 8600 for me in early December. Within a week, the computer froze (no keyboard or mouse reaction); tried to reboot & it froze about 3 seconds into the XP Pro splash screen. Dell convinced me that XP was corrupt. Tried an XP repair with no luck. Tried a full reformat (bye bye to all of my data) & new XP install: still same lockup on boot. Dell sent a serviceman & replaced motherboard & hard disk. I spent the next day re-installing XP & ALL software. A week later, SAME lockup. I ranted & a new 8600 was sent to me. Yesterday (4 months later), SAME lockup / refusal to boot. Ran ALL diagnostics ... DELL tech support person suggested an XP repair: put in DELL CD-ROM & it all looked fine until "Starting Windows...", when the 8600 again froze. It is now on its way to the DELL shop. I am ready to scream at my company for something else.
Regarding the power supply, I have not had any of the mentioned problems. I have a docking station at home and it has worked fine (I like the mouse & parallel ports missing on the 8600). The power supplies are 65W (both the std one & the travelling one that works in the car / plane).
The computer is slow operating the software (takes time to switch between open programs) & the full-screen DVD playback shakes (will the new Nvidia driver help?).

My company purchased 3 8600s in December 2003 from Dell Outlet (refurbs) with the port replicators. In October 2004, one of the machines wouldn't boot with the port replicator or adapter - same error: "The computer is docked and only battery power is detected..." Fortunately, it was still under Dell's one-year warranty on refurbs. After sending it off to have the motherboard replaced, it's been fine (so far). Recently, the other 2 machines had the same problem. By my count, that's a 100% failure rate on these things. Since we're now outside our warranty, Dell offered to replace the motherboards for a minimum of $500 - interestingly, but not surprisingly, they also suggested I look at the prices on the *new* Dell Inspirons - "very competitive", the guy told me, "and maybe a better idea to just buy a new one". Yeah, RIGHT! After this experience, I plan on looking for another source for equipment for our company - understand that I've *only* bought Dell for this compnay since I was put in this position 7 years ago. This is clearly a defect - Dell should be issuing a recall and offer to replace motherboards on all of these machines they sold - they've done it in the past on the Inspiron 2650s.

Did someone mention a class-action suit? I'm in....

I got my 8600 a month back, and i really don't know whether to laugh or cry right now. Its the fastest notebook pc i've ever had. But it crashed on the first day it came out of the box. "No worries", i thought. "Just an obscure, once in the lifetime crash". How sadly mistaken i was. Till this day, it has locked up virtually every single day i've used to. This happens whenever i surf websites that (i deduced) either had some javascript or ActiveX script. Firefox, IE both crash equally well. I also had a traumatic time with Microsoft Word 2003. I could never type a single character in it before it locked up. By then i realized something was awfully amiss. One time, a BSOD told me my video drivers were causing the problem (i have a Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo... i have used their desktop counterparts with absolutely no problem at all). I ended up using a very old "A02" release.... and now MS Word boots up! (the newest release i can find is A04) its still not as stable as can be, but at least it works. Surfing the net still isn't that safe however. I sometimes quiver at the thought of having another lockup when i have to check my mail on gmail....

Called tech support regarding this driver issue, but the poor dude had absolutely no clue. Bless his heart. Considering the fact i'm a computer engineer, i think i stressed him out to the point he disappeared for about 7minutes only to appear more assertive, speaking like he knew what was going on... well, i gave him a rather logical lecture and he ended up saying i should try "repairing windows" again, which i did just this morning! maybe i should speak to his puppet masters one day... but i doubt they would ever even have a clue...

Since he was a decent and sincere fellow, i didn't roast him much. He'll be "researching" what he can about my issue and will get back to me tomorrow. I'll also be telling him of my "progress" tomorrow....

will keep ya' all updated...

There is a small button on 8600 battery which would show the life of the battery. Each light indicates that 20% of your battery is dead. If all 5 light up, your battery is a zombie!

At the risk of sounding like a Dell basher, I'd like to offer a little advice. I'm a PC and laptop tech. I worked for a consulting firm for several years where, among other things, I maintained the company’s fleet of laptop computers. I now operate my own small consulting business. Of all the different laptop brands I have maintained and serviced over the years, the only one that was truly reliable was the IBM Thinkpad. I really don't understand how Dell has achieved such a high level of consumer confidence. I suppose it's the marketing. They certainly haven't earned it through the sales of reliable laptops and good customer service. They have yet to do either.

I don't resell IBM products. I only want to pass along a little insight to those of you who are suffering with a bad laptop. When it's time to buy a new laptop, take a good look at the IBM Thinkpad X Series. They are a little more expensive than Dell, I'll admit that, but the up front cost is small compared to the aggravation you'll get if you try to save by buying a lesser machine.

In closing I want to make it clear that I have no desire to be part of any brand war, and I will not respond to anyone who attempts to draw me into one. I also would like to wish you all the best of luck with your current laptops. Thank you for reading. :-)

Actually each light that lights up is a good thing. All lights off indicates the battery is dead (else what is powering the lights?).

As to strange 8600 stuff, I have been looking at a Dell 8600 that belongs to a friend's son and discovered why his AC adapter is not powering his computer (or charhing the battery). Believe it or not the central pin inside the adapter end that plugs into the laptop is missing! I can't be sure until I cut it apart but it seems to have been pushed all the way inside the housing when he plugged it into the laptop - and thus can't get a reliable connection. It is not inside the laptop port (my first thought) as I have a D800 (same adapter - manufacturer part number 7W104) charger that plugs into it and now it charges!

To be fair to Dell, from reading the posts here (I am an engineer) their problems here are first buying an AC adapter from someone with (apparantly) poor QC (this part number keeps cropping up in complaints and I think it might have been recalled in England - didnt know they had same power as US so this rumor may be false) and also not being careful enough when shipping adaptors with differing power requirements (65W versus 95W is a heck of a lot of difference and could fry any loptop given enough time to do it). Hope this helps.

BTW, I would advise folks to be careful when looking for an aftermarket AC adapter replacement. I have more electronic devices than the normal person (three Dell laptops, a Dell Axim x50v PDA, and a cell phone next to right now - and I am on the road) and while the temptation to get one device to charge them all is great - please read the fine print before buying. For example, I use the new IGo Anywhere kit (does 120V, car, and airplane) that allows me to charge a laptop (most laptop tips included) and another device (PDA or cell) at one time. However, for the folks here you should be aware that the kit does NOT include the S20 tip for the Dell Inspiron 8600 or Dell Lattitude D800 (they are the same computer - really - lay them both next to each other and defy someone to figure out which is which - it shut up some Lattitude snobs at work). More importantly, the S20 tip when connected to any IGo adapter will NOT charge your battery - it will only power the laptop. Basically, these laptops require too much juice (95W vs 65W remember?). Its this same issue (higher juice requirement) that is causing IGo to NOT make a PDA adapter tip for the Dell Axim x50v I have (the VGA sucks it up). So....while I still gain some weight savings when traveling with the IGo (my other Dell laptops and my cell phone), I am not sure I would have gotten it ($130) if I had known in advance it would not be that much help with the D800 and the PDA. Cavet Emptor and Cheers. PS - sorry for the spelling typos earlier.

Interesting to hear. So far nobody could tell me why my inspirion 8600 just starts with the Ac power and the battery won´t charge. I bought a new battery since I was told the Battery got sour...Same problem. Thanks for the news.

Has anyone seen this issue, my dell 8600 started acting weird about a month ago. I had to hit the power button multiple times to start the computer. What would happen is that I would hit the power button and like 10 seconds later the 8600 would start. Yesterday I tried to turn it on, and now the laptop won't start at all. Plugging in the power cord I see no lights, nothing... could it be the infamous motherboard? This is the second time we have had this laptop breakdown on us. About 9 months ago they replaced the hard drive and the dvd-drive... it's crap! Anyways if any one has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Everyone having trouble with your batteries charging please read Darrin's comments from 4/30. He is right on the money. I have an Inspiron 8600 that stopped charging the battery. I bought a new battery and a new power supply. The problem persisted. I called Dell tech support and they said I would need to replace the motherboard. The motherboard needs to be able to detect the type of AC adapter being used in order to charge the battery. After reading Darrin's comments, I realized that he may be on to something. The label on the laptop said it required more power than the AC adapter could provide. Even though it seemed to work fine in the beginning and still ran fine when powered with the wrong adapter. I decided to purchase a 90W power supply (PN 7W104). It cost me $40 on ebay. Now everything works great! The battery charges when plugged into the adapter! If you are having the same problems, it is worth a shot for $40 to try it out. Good luck.

I have had a Dell Inspiron 8600 since February. It works fine if I don't dock it. Most of the time when I dock it, it fails to recognize my external keyboard. It also gives me shocks and has emitted a solid string of beeps upon being booted (until turned off). Dell has replaced the motherboard twice, the hard drive once (fried by the shocks, I suspect), and the docking station twice. It still has all the same problems. I'm still using the computer I bought it to replace. Dell technical support has been extremely polite, but extremely ineffective, too. I am about ready to throw the machine out and buy something that docks and works at the same time.

During purchase you have a choice of a 65w or 90w power adapter. Not so much a 'they sent you the wrong power adapter' - just they wanted you to pay more for the right one ;) btw, i thought i'd share that my IMB/HITACHI deathstar harddrive (60gig) died after ony 11 months. So all you 8600 users watch out. (and of course, keep regular backups).

I replaced my hard drive in my Inspiron 8600 12 months and two weeks after I got the computer. The PC was never dropped or bumped.

Dell support is worthless. The Dell people who worked on my laptop said they replaced the graphics card and Monitor, but they couldn't fine any problems with the system? Gee it will not boot? ….and they couldn’t find the problem………

I also have a Dell Inspiron 8600. I do not have the "dock" but my system does not boot on the first try. Dell replaced the graphics card & monitor but it was still a problem. This 8600 also doesn’t like to shut down at times. I can go through the start menu and click “shut down”, or “restart” all I like but it just will not shut down. This is also a problem with a Dell Dimension 8250 I was given when a friend died. I also know five people at my college of VCU who own Dell computers both desktop and laptops that often will not boot or shut down correctly.

Then right after the warranty ran out the hard drive took a crap and died. I replaced the hard drive myself and the system worked fine for a spell. My Inspiron 8600 is not a bad PC when it works. It has never been dropped. It is like new, I do not use it much as it was only for trips since I have six desktop PC’s at home. The rubber “nubs” are always falling off as well. Nothing real big there but it is a bother replacing them all the time. It is also odd that the Inspiron is faster than the Dimension 8250. The Dimension 8250 has 1GB of memory and the Inspiron 8600 has only 384MB.

> Note: Even while plugged in the Inspiron 8600 will shut down out of the blue.

>> I had problems with my Inspiron 8600 getting too hot right after I got it back from Dell when they said they fixed the graphics card. I removed the cooling fan on the bottom and found it was not working. I found a broken Dell Inspiron 8600 another college student got fed up with and tossed in the trash and used the fan from that to fix mine. I am trying to order a new fan from dell with no luck. My Inspiron is now 14 months old and well taken care of. This Insprion is not used much. I have only about 2 to four monts of use on it as I own seven desktops at home.

Note: I build computers on my own. I have five Inspirons here I am fixing for other college students after they couldn't get Dell to fix them. Three dell sent them new Motherboards and told them to put them in. So they gave me the laptops to get fixed. dell support is no help. Even if you send in your laptop, like mine, the problem is not always fixed.

I am yet another unhappy Dell customer. I recently purchased (2) 8600's and received one with a bad touch pad. Dell sent a replacement part but the replacement part did not have the OS and CPU decals on it. I contacted Dell and they jerked me around until I finally file with the BBB & AG's office (2 months, long enough I could not return it). Dell contacted me and stated the warranty does not cover cosmetic parts, so what eles is not covered. You buy a new laptop and have immediate trouble and the replacement parts are not even complete. The laptop looks used and naked now and Dell thinks this is acceptable for a new machine still under warranty. Glad I did not buy the extended warranty, can't wait until parts run low and they start shipping scratched and cosmetically damaged parts. I bet then we will hear others complain. Dell support went from saying yes to no to yes to I'll send a replacement with them installed to thet are no longer available to we just won't ship them to you.

Another note: since the complaint Dell cancelled my pending order and retracted my discount (concession) coupons. Very childish and goes against their own code of conduct. - Thank Dell

Dell - Never Again.. Save your money and frustration, do not buy Dell... Good bye Dell!

Class action? Count me in.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 ( two years old) and the Dell Distributor here in the Philippines has diagnosed that it needs a new mother board. The laptop is out of warranty, hence the quotation to replace the motherboard is 50,000 Philippine Pesos ( about $US 895 ) Can any one put me in the direction for a cheaper motherboard, because at that cost, I could almost buy another Laptop. Hmmm, I am in trouble like most of you. My Inspiron 8600 won't power up and called support to explain the issue along with the 4.62 A vs 3.34 A mis-match. But, they claim that it should work fine even with the mis-match. I am out of warranty and am close to trashing it or I have to spend more than $600 to replace the motherboard and hope it works, which is highly doubtful!

I might as well buy a new one and the support guy concurred with me. It's less than 2 years old and the laptop is broke completely.

Should have got the extended warranty but didn't. Now, I have to start looking at some HP or Lenova latops as they are more reliable - I have been using them at work and working fine without any issues.

Ohhhhhhhhh, I am going crazzzzzzy now!!!

I am the unfortunate owner of a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with the advanced port replicator. The computer never worked right from the day I got it but Dell stalled for the 21 day return policy. The issues include no icons on start up or restart in the docking station. I tracked it down to what USB port for the mouse was in use and was able to limp along by unplugging the mouse when booting up. After many, many days of calling Dell and getting the run around they wanted me to reformate the computer. When that didn't work they had me send it back to replace the motherboard which only made the problems worse. All I want is my money back. Stay away from Dell unless you are into bamboo shoots under your fingernails!

Hey everyone. I posted the message on 4/30 about the 3.34A vs. 4.62A AC adapter issue. Anyone having problems with power/batteries/adapters/lockups please read that post. And for those of you whose Inspirons are out of warranty, don't worry, ours was too. I made it very clear to Dell that this is NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE. THIS IS A MISTAKE MADE BY DELL!!! You just need to thoroughly explain the situation, and make sure to escalate to a supervisor, and even refer them to this message board post. I even threatened them with a class-action lawsuit, stating that there are 100s perhaps 1000s of people having this problem, the evidence of which is all over the Internet. Just be persistent -- I think I was on the phone for about 2 hours until I finally won my case!!!

On a final note, ever since I got Dell to replace the AC Adapter (with the correct 4.62A one) and the battery, the computer has run WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS!!! Russ's post from 7/15 will back up this claim!!

Hello again, Update on my sux @$$ Dell Inspiron 8600. I was having trouble with it powering up "booting". Well the other day and just took the computer apart again and I cleaned all contacts to all connectors. Well the bugger is working again. I had put the problem to rest for a while after I replaced my hard drive. I took extra care to clean the connector to the hard drive and to the monitor. I don't know the name of this cleaner I have, it came from my work as an electrician. It is used to clean electrical contacts but the label is long gone.
So I replaced the hard drive and the problem only popped up once or twice a week for a while. Then it started to get worse again. So I have cleaned all of the contacts and removed all connections and reconnected them. The laptop seems to be ok once again, for now.

I seem to have all the wrong stuff aswell, but I've had my laptop for a year, and it has never behaved strangely like that! Reading what you all are going through is scary , this Laptop runs like a dream for me. I also have a 60gb HDD, and a guy somewhere further up said that his 60gb HDD died on him...! But about the case of erronous adapters, even if I'm not experiencing the symptoms, should I change it?

oh, and by the way, I checked the Dell forums. I found something of interest for people with DOCKING PROBLEM:
Note: Systems with the lower of the two AC adapter types need to be plugged in with the power turned off to charge the battery. If you receive an error by using the incorrect AC adapter type, this may be the reason.

D-series docking stations require at least 90 Watt adapters.

Hope it helps.

Does anyone know what this error means? or how to fix?

Well all of you the main problem is the dell motherboard power conector. If your have battery issues ie; not charging then the center pin is not talking to the charge circuit. Same thing goes if you have been using a docking port the center pin data from your charger is no longer transmitting the correct signal and your mother board believes it has no power. I have found if you can find a shop that can do it, replace the power conector on the motherboard and woo hoo everything is as it should be.

Here is what has happened to my system. First, I reported that the AC adapter as not charging my battery in February 2005. Tech supported stated that I needed a new battery. So in the meantime I'm using the AC adapter as power source. I finally bought a new battery in June 2005 and the AC adapter still doesn't work. Then, tech supported told me that my motherboard needed to be replaced. After the motherboard was replaced with a refurbished motherboard inJune 2005, the AC adapter still didn't charge the new and the old battery. Then, I told tech support that it was the AC Adapter that broke. After that I got a refurbhised AC adapter. Everything woked till August 21, 2005 then my system won't turn on anymore. So I contacted Tech support and tech support told me that I needed to replace the motherboard. Ok, that's fine. Dell service provider replaced the refurbished motherboard that was installed in June 2005 with another refurbished motherboard on August 24, 2005. My sytem
was working again till August 27, 2005 when the AC adpater is no longer found on my system.

The Inspiron 8600 should work using both 65 and 90 Watt adapters. The label on the ac adapter just shows the highest value (4.62A) instead of showing all the adapters it can use. The 65 watts adapter for Inspiron 8600 should be able to provide minimal power for basic functionality. It is not expected to charge your battery if the computer is in use even if it is plugged in. It was designed to start charging the battery only if the computer has surplus electricity to spare. The best way to charge the battery is by leaving it plugged in for about 2-3 hours while the system is turned off.
The Dell AC adapters are also sensitive to power fluctuations. So, buy a surge protector or back up power. For all we know, it could be your power lines causing your sensitive and aging Dell computers all your troubles.
Keep your system clean as well. Buy compressed air to clean it regularly.

My Dell Inspiron 8600 is giving the below problems:
a) The fan starts moving with fast speed making a loud sound and till the time the fan is on ,I cant do any multimedia applications like watching movie/video,playing games etc..
The only way is to restart..

Any idea what might be the solution ??..

b)Earlier this problem used to happen after 2/3 hours of playing games/watching video but now it has started happening in less than a hour.

c)MY warranty is about to expire in oct 2005 and during my chat with dell support, they have asked me to run the drivers CD for fan and have sent me a BIOS update link.

d)But after going through all the problems over here,I am getting worried ,that suppose after running the BIOS update (or any other remedy which the Dell support suggest's) if the problem gets resolved for short term but pops up again ,once my warranty expires...will Dell still support it without charging any $$$ ???? I doubt..

Any advice ???

e) Also as per the post from "Darrin" on 4/30,my laptop also mentions for 19.5 V ~ 4.62 A but the power of AC adapter is 65 W only...I shall be following this up with Dell support and shall update everyone.

1) After running the diganostic test CD ,it gave me an error message for my fan high speed as "Error 3700 : Expected Fan High speed :6300 ,Actual speed : 0".

2) After speaking with Dell support they promptly send me a new Fan and the link for how to replace the fan(its easy).
But even after replacing the fan the problem of my video/game getting slow persisted.

3) I decided to run the diagnostic test CD again and it gave me the same error saying fan speed is "0".
Also once while rebooting my laptop gave this error message :
"The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. This will prevent optimal system performance".

4) I am wondering is this related to the power adapter issue mentioned in post from "Darring" on 4/30.

I have been using an INSPIRON 8600, bought in germany, for almost one and half years. It had been running perfectly fine for almost a year and then off lately it doesn't always power on when i click on the power button on the key board (doesn't matter when AC adapter is in or battery is in). It usually switches on in the first attempt and say i switch off my machine and try to switch it on again it doesn't work and it would not work for alteast some time. I am not sure of the problem, though i faced this on the first week i bought the laptop and the motherboard was replaced by them. Then it worked fine for almost a year and it's now causing the same problem. Does anybody has a similar problem or any clue on how to resolve this

I too have fallen prey to the Dell Inspiron 8600. My system would not recognize the AC power adapter and would not charge the battery. I went to the 90 watt adapter but it still didn't recogize it andd the battery won't charge. I got the standard "your mother board is bad " reply from Dell. I finally got brave enough to take it apart, thought maybe there was a bad fuse in the charging circuit. I didn't find any bad fuses....no schematic of the mother board so I'm stuck. Anyone have a schematic - maybe we can identify what is going bad with the charging circuit and save alot of people $$$ and frustration. Dell dies indeed suck, my college bound kids will not own Dells, I e-mailed them that message.....they could care less. They already have my money.

It is the mismatched (cheaper) 65W AC adapter that is at fault. Dell tried to give me a new motherboard but eventually sent me a new 90W adapter and battery. All is well now. This is an issue that should be publicized and Dell should replace all the 65W adapters for at least the 8600, which I know something about, with the 90W. Part #7W104, advertised for Inspiron 8500/8600 on the Dell website for $62.96, but you can get it free if under warranty and you persevere.

Posted by Michael on 9/30/2005 3:44 AM
Russ Rogers & Crumpler seem to have the sam problem with the display I have. The screen suddenly goes blank. I phoned Dell support here in Finland and they asked me to open the display. We found out that the display adapter cable (Dell part number CN-02C415-12961-41S-M0EW / REV A00) has a very bad soldering. There is an grounding wire that should be soldered to a thin copper plate. However, the wire is partially on the side of this plate and touches the plastic insulation of the very thin leads. The insulation is partly melted and the wire is exposed TO THE GROUNDING WIRE!!! Guess what happens when the signal is shortcircuited - yes, the display goes blank (probably to protect itself). So for the moment I am fighting with local Dell support (only three phone calls so far) to get a free replacement cable. I'll keep you posted on the results. PS I have some close-up pictures of the cable if you are interested. Send me an e-mail and I'll reply with the pictures. firstname@backstrom.com. (firstname is in the header)

Arg I hate this!!! Freaking Dell. I got an 8600 and the LCD just stopped working and I'm a week out of my warrenty. I can see the very, very faint lines of my display on the LCD, but it's not enough to do anything with. I'm using a monitor with my laptop to use it but I'm a photographer and i need my computer to be portable. It wasn't dropped or anything, I shut it down, then a few hours later when I turned it back on, it wasn't working. Dang I hate this, I should've gotten a Toshiba. If anyone knows what I can do about this, email me and I'll give you a free photography session in my studio if you're ever in western Massachusetts. Well I'll call Dell again tomorrow and see what I can get out of them. jason@jsdphoto.com

For about a month now I've been watching this thread to see if anyone could come up with a fix for this "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. This will prevent optimal system performance" problem causing the battery not to charge.
So far I've bought two new adapters (both 90W AND 65W), A CAR adapter, Two batteries off Ebay, and a modular battery....
NONE of these items solved my problems whatsoever.
So NOW, rather than buy a new motherboard...
Or buying a new laptop (CERTAINLY NOT A DELL EVER AGAIN).....
I've purchased an 8600 off Ebay with a broken screen in hopes of a cheap solution to my problem. We'll see, but either way, there MUST be a fix for this.
Has ANYONE tried figuring out the signal flow of the adapter input on the motherboard? What part sends charge to the battery and can it be changed out by simple soldering?
This is MUCH too common an issue here not to have a fix for.
ANYONE have ANY ideas for me??????
PLEASE e-mail me @ TISGOD@yahoo.com

Ok - I have the same power supply problem, the smaller 65W was shipped with the 8600 in Dec 04. We also have a 8500, which is extremely similar that has a power plug issue ( I believe someone posted earlier it was a S20 ) Because of the poor design of this plug I will try to replace it with a more robust design ( ie IBM's round plug ) and matching male end on the PS. Let u know how well it goes! the current jack has "foxconn 1323A"

I hope this isn't a send post from me. I have had a 8600 for two years and mostly it is fine.
On boot up 2 or 3 times I got the "Blue Screen of Death", and it would not power up.
I removed AC Adapter and battery, waited 20 seconds, re-installed both and it booted fine. Just a quick and dirty test, I have found helps.

Posted by mike on 10/7/2005 10:50 PM
Anyone have problems when gaming using the keyboard and mouse at same times some keys seem to become "sticky" where some buttons freeze up and even then the mouse becomes unusable until it stops its freezing up which can last up to a minute or so. This really is annoying because I try gaming playing FPS games and all of a sudden instead of stop running so I can shoot I just keep running and end up rather getting shot! I noticed setting the key repeat rate lower helps a bit, so something tells me that the laptop isn't being able to process the keyboard/mouse inputs fast enough so the commands get put into a wait line to be executed... So if you hold the forward button down and there is a high repeat rate, instead of the computer looking at it like: arrow up = pressed down, it looks at it like arrow up = pressed up and down fast (depends on repeate rate). Maybe it is just the application but I think the keyboard I/O function was not programmed properly. I am wondering if switching the keyboard to it's own IRQ would make a difference (I have read on a previous post that keyboard and mouse share 1 IRQ). Anyone else have this problem or any resolution to it please let me know, I really am not going to even bother with dell support since I know that doesn't get you anywhere and besides that they don't even know what they are talking about half the time :(

I have been looking all over the web for some information about the error:

The computer is docked and only battery power is detected.
This can happen if the power adapter is unplugged,
or the computer is not properly connected to the
docking station.

I found this blog and after reading all of it tested the power supply that came with the docking station and sure enough it was the 3.34A not the 4.62A AC adapter. Since this is a student computer I asked if he had the higher amp adapter, which he brought in today. Guess what with the 4.62A adapter the laptop boots right up. Hmm... I want to call dell for the kids docking station, but maybe it would be easier buy one from ebay.

It worked for me.

Thanks for the info,

Dan

...if your have battery issues ie; not charging then the center pin is not talking to the charge circuit...
-------------------------------------
I dug around and found out on Dell's customer help site (where customers solve Dell's technical issues) that it is further explained that there is a chip in the adapter that can go bad. The chip is programmed to authenticate to the computer that the adapter is a Dell APPROVED adapter. If this chip goes, then your battery won't charge, however, your computer can still get power.

I bought a new adapter and battery (I needed to anyway since the battery held a charge for less than an hour from 2 years of 8+ hours of daily use) and my issues were solved.

It looks like the issues in this thread can be caused by any one or a combination of:
1. Battery going bad
2. Adapter chip/circuitry went bad
3. Motherboard chip/circuitry that is used to handshake with the adapter went bad

How much could this run you?
1 = $150+ for new battery
2 = $50+ for new Dell APPROVED adapter
3 = $600+ for new motherboard
4 = any combination of 1-3

Remember to use your surge surpression even with your notebook adapter. That should help maintain the integrity of your notebook and adapter circuitry.

I have to use the one that came with the docking station. That is the only way I can get it to work. I guess I will need to install an inverter in my car. This is pitiful.

I have a Dell 8500 that I have been thoroughly pleased with...... Except for the same problem you all are having. The battery wont charge. I own 4 batteries now, and 3 different adaptors. All power up the laptop, but fail to charge the battery. So Im forced to believe that the motherboard must be bad. Im afraid I wont buy another Dell. This laptop was top of the line when purchased. It has every option that was available and cost quite a bit of money. It was my first laptop investment. Now again... overall Im pleased, but you have a laptop for convienience and flexibility.... if I have to lug a power adaptor everytime I want to move the laptop from the office to the bedroom, its kind of discouraging, you know? If anyone finds anything out... please post. I have tried everything listed above, and have not been successful.

Arghh...

Started crashing out of the blue. Yesterday it won't even get into Windows. Press F12 a couple of time while booting to get into diagnostics. Everything seems fine. At least an hour later via online chat with Dell the final suggestion is to re-install Windows XP along with the instructions. Time to boot Knoppix and see how it goes. I'll also put the hard drive into a USB adapter and pull off the important data. Then I can rebuild XP. Of course I'll see the same problem... I think the warranty ran out about a month ago.

Checked the power supply for the Dell 8600 nad it was the 3.34 v thought that might be the problem then checked the centre pin and found that it was bent. Straightened the pin now it is charging again.
Suggest those who can power up but not charge check the centre pin.

Borrowed a 65w (P-12) adapter and have to put tension on plug next to to laptop. Now can charge battery and do not get warning message. Bottom of laptop says the 4.62 vs 3.34. Any reason for cause?

Well I think you are all are either retarded or you don’t know how to take care of a computer. I have had my 8600 for a year now and the only problem I had was one of the little rubber feet fell off which dell had in my mailbox the next day. As long as you don’t screw around with things you don’t know and don’t visit questionable websites your fine. stop complaining about how they charge more for the nice adapter, of course they are going to charge more its a company they need to make money every other computer place sells the same low quality crap everything is made by the same manufacturers and its all run by the same software, if any renovation needs to be made to a dell computer its deleting windows, best thing you can ever do. Linux was the best thing to happen to my computer. so all of you people wining about how your system sucks you deserve it for messing around with things, skimping out when it came to the warranty and not making sure you protected your investment.

I had a problem with my laptop - LATITUDE D800 - no power - and I bumped into your site - Problem solved in an unusal way. Fold back screen to 180 degrees. Identify Hinge. Find slight gap near ESC key. Lift up hinge, all panel should come away - including - on/off, caps, numlock, reset etc. Switch on Power again - it works !!!!! Ensure connector to panel slots correclty into connector on main board. 3 Hours of frustration - just about going in the bin.. (found it via Dell site.. )

I have had a Dell Inspiron 8600 for probably close to 2.5 years now and I've loved it for the most part....however...several problems with it...
1. It is too powerful for a laptop and overheats causing the fan to be ridiculously loud.
2. My keyboard has some issues with the backspace key no longer working...I think some dirt or something may have caused the problem but I cleaned with alcohol and cotton swabs to no avail.
3. I am having issues with docking the computer after all this time and for some reason it doesn't think it is really docked...hopefully this wont be a replacement issue and will only be a clean some contacts or install some software/drivers
4. And my final issue is that Dell outsourced its tech support to India where I cannot understand "Bob's" voice and he doesn't understand anything I ask/want from him
Moral to the story...have someone build you a machine if possible because even if it costs you a little more, they will most likely be willing to assist you as much as possible so that you will come to them again when you need a new one...as for laptops...avoid them if possible because they are more expensive and more troublesome...just the nature of the beast
Good luck to everyone and I hope all the issues get resolved to everyone's satisfaction (or as best as possible!)

Well I just gave a chat tech support person hell about the wrong wattage,.. 60 vs. 90 and he is sending me a free 90w.. he actually seemed scared.. go for it,.. I will post if it charges my uncharging battery. :)

He mentioned that the 90w is "optional" with the 8600.. I snapped back with questioning about why someone would want more amperage and watts and such,.. he quickly moved on to needing my mailing address. :)

I think they are programmed to rectify the situation so take advantage of it. My laptop is not still under warantee, either. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight posted here I am mobile again!!! Take care all. Again,.. everyone try it,.. just go to Dell and do a CHAT with technical support and call them on the wrong adapter claim. I finally got to talk to a 2nd level technician @ Dell and agreed to send him the pictures. A few phone calls more and he finally agreed to give me his personal e-mail. He looked at the pictures and called his boss and the next morning (16 hours later) I had a new cable waiting at my desk when I arrived to work.
As I am curious, I opened the new cable and found that Dell has changed the design.... So this is not an unknown problem for Dell and they are correcting it for free even after expiration of warranty period (at least for me).

My 8600 sometimes will, and sometimes won't recognize that its plugged into the power adapter. If I'm not careful, I'll run the battery down and not be able to re -start the computer once its out of juice.
I guess I'm going to go with the idea of replacing my power adapter with a 90W, instead of using the 65W supplied by Dell.
I've also had the DVDRW break, and have had a miserable time with Dells Laser printers. This will probably be my last Dell purchase.

Suprised that I seem to be the only one with my issue:
My laptop works great as long as I don't let it slip into standby mode. Once in standby for more than a minute or so, it refuses to come back to life - the dvd drive spins and nothing. I have to hold the power button down until it shuts off, then turn it back on.

Dell support told me to disable standby for all modes (ac, battery) and disable all start up programs. I asked what kind of solution that was and hung up....

I had read some of the posts with interest and was going to organise a new 90W adapter and battery tomorrow. I decided I may as well upgrade the BIOS anyway (from A09 to A14), which I did, and guess what....it proceeded to load the OS first time from battery when restarted. Only problem now is, when it goes to sleep on battery, I can't get it to wake up again and have to turn it off. Looks like it's back to the new adapter and battery after all!

The tech, was very pleased that he didnt have to explain anything, just walked me thru the test protocol. The one thing i didnt remove when i did it, was the wireless network card.... voila it was the culprit! removed it and the computer boots all the time!

Dell also sent me a new one without charge even though i was out on warranty.

just wanted to share.

OK Vlad, you have a lisence for XP they should be able to send you a new disk, it sounds like a software thing and not hardware so i would agree and reinstall xp, if you dont have the cd borrow it from someone or get it from dell. your lisence on the bottom of the computer will still be good. if that doesnt work back up your infor and reformat. sometimes its easier just to reformat than tinker with things.

I would like to thank all of you for taking the time to post the learnings from your experiences with these Dell machines. It is very disheartening to contact Dell about these issues. I am now on my second motherboard and am truly P-SSED, because this one is not responding. After replacement of the motherboard it worked fine for 2 weeks. Now here I am again. I Work for a large company that uses nothing but Dell machines. not only have I seen this issue on the D800 series, but I have seen it on the D600 series as well. I saw the mention earlier about having the 90w power adapter. i Actually have it and still not luck. This is ridiculous. I bet I will not buy or even reccommend a dell again.

"Arg I hate this!!! Freaking Dell. I got an 8600 and the LCD just stopped working and I'm a week out of my warrenty. I can see the very, very faint lines of my display on the LCD, but it's not enough to do anything with. "

MATE!!!!

I am one hell of a pissed off DELL customer!
My monitor TOO had ceased fucntioning. It first started by flickering. Then the LCD went blocky to the point where it was just brken image. And now it won't even work. I cant see nothing... Just a white screen with some thin thin lines going vertical.....
AND MY WARRANTY ONLY EXPIRED A MONTH BEFORE THAT!!!!!
I was not even offered to extend my warranty at the time of purchase, so it was only valid for a year. And techs even said "you should have bought extended warranty"... I mean WTF?!?!?! IT WAS NOT OFFERED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NOT AN OPTION!!!!!
I bought it directly of DELL.

SO DELL GO TO HELL!!!!!! A BIG F*** YOU!

***Possible workaround for blinking caps/num/scroll lock power up problem***

If your 8600 only boots very occasionally and the rest of the time the three lights flash then stay on before the laptop powers off, try the following:

About 8 seconds after powering on and _before the laptop powers off_, press the power button rapidly and keep doing so until the laptop powers off and then back on. With a bit of luck it will boot up properly. It seems to work best if the laptop has cooled down first.

I think the reason for this boot problem is the power rails haven't stabilized before the motherboard comes out of reset. This means the laptop crashes right at the beginning before it even gets to the BIOS.

By getting it to switch back on as soon as it switches off the power rails stabilize more quickly so it has a chance to boot up properly.

I'd expect this could be down to poor components in the motherboard power supply (capacitors?) and/or a reset signal that is too short.

If Dell had provided a reset button somewhere then it could have made things a lot easier...

If anyone out there has or knows where to get a circuit diagram for the motherboard please post here.
It should be possible to fix the motherboard supply or modify the reset circuit, but it's a lot of hassle without a circuit diagram.

cheers,
Pete.

The computer is docked and only battery power is detected.
This can happen if the power adapter is unplugged,
or the computer is not properly connected to the
docking station.........

This is the comment that brought me to this site as I too have had this problem. Although the PC "thinks" it's docked, if you check the BIOS, it indicates that it is "Undocked". In this condition, it also disabled the port on my NIC card. THE FIX...... Plug a power supply into the PC and start it up. Once all the system files are loaded and HD activity is over, disconnect the power supply so that the PC is running on battery power only. Shut dowon the PC. This seems to toggle the Undocking state which allows the PC to start back up in a normal fashon. I don't know if this is a fix for everyone, or how permanent it is, but it worked for me.

Working on a client's Dell 8600.
Saw only one post 1/6/06 re same issue. When Laptop goes to sleep, even though power setting is "never sleep", monitor does not come back to life when coming back from standby. External monitor will not light either (cycle thru LCD Function key), HDD light flashes and laptop shuts down gracefully with one push of power button (not 7 second hold) - I can tell because of music. I am wondering if something else is going to sleep... NIC, Bluetooth, etc...

Has anyone ever seen this with thier 8600? When I switch on my machine the Dell Logo and the Win XP Splash screen appear corrupted, there are dashed lines through the logo's and graphics. If I restart a couple of times then the corruption will disappear for a couple months then all a sudden it will come back.

Hi, before i begin i want to thank Jeff Julian for starting this discussion thread. I have been frustrated with sorting out this non-recharging battery issue on a dell Inspiron 8600. The dell forums were fruitless (and ofcourse moderated and edited to keep the root of these problems muted.) I checked the battery pins and they were fine so it wasnt applicable here in my situation. laptop runs fine on battery and a/c power but does not charge the battery. I bought a 19.5v 4.62A (old one was 3.34A) and it worked the instant i plugged it into the laptop. Shame on dell for putting customer service on the back burner. Shame on dell for providing a lesser a/c adapter than even specified on the laptop itself. I guess corporate is just focused on meeting the quarterly estimates and not on the customers themselves.

I have the Dell AC adapter that outputs 4.62A: P/N: 7W104 and P/N: 9T215. And still receive the AC Power Adapter type cannot be determined. The laptop is a 8500. It still boots up by hitting F1, but the battery does not recharge. So, that adapter may fail you in the long run as well as the 65w adapter. I might try another battery, but at this point, it's not worth fixing, and I am no longer buying Dell laptops. Brought two Toshiba Satellites recently and have had no problems . Besides you get a bigger bang for your buck for the configuration on Toshiba's.

I have the same problem with Dell D600. I tried the solution provided by BLS. Then I get a new message
" Your power adapther does not supply enough power to run the attached docking station. Either undock or insert an appropriate adapter".

It starts fine on the docking station though.
Looks like I have to carry the docking station when I travel. Well it is better than carring the desktop itself right?...

I have this Dell Inspiron 8600. This IS a hardware issue. I do not currently have access to another Dell Inspiron. The problem is: The machine will boot halfway into windows and then will automatically start reboot all over again and again and again.
Normally, I would do a system OS repair. However, I CANNOT OPEN THE CD drive to put the CD in!!! There isn't any way to open this particular drive other than via the program that loads with windows OS!
If anyone knows how to open the cd caddy without going into windows first, please let me know!
Like most intelligent computer designs, My Toshiba has a pinhole for opening the cd even when its off!

I have the problem with the LCD on my 8600 going blank. The machine is over 2 years old and has been fine until now. Dell says send it in for $498 and 15 working days. Since it still works on the external monitor, I am looking for other solutions. Has anyone found that replacing the cable fixed the problem or is it indeed necessary to replace the LCD? I have removed the hinge cover to expose the cable but cannot see where the cable terminates. Any input would be appreciated.

Hi! Also got a 8600 whose motherboard has just died on me, at least I think so! I just can't get it to boot! Everytime I hit the power button I see the power led on for around 10secs and it's out again. At first I though it was the ac adapter but I have the 4.62A AC adapter the correct one per all you guiys comments above. I tryed to get it to strat up with only the ac adapter or the battery, neither worked? Any ideas?? It's just that for $400 for a new motherboard I rather save my money and buy a whole new laptop. Perhaps the new IBM Z series. Don't get me wrong, I always liked Dell, but this last experience kinda got me really " Hulk" angry.

I used to have a problem with the computer turning on... dell sent me a new motherboard...of course... just to find out that if you were to take off the hatch that the powerbutton is on, on the left side, there was a little plug that came undone, which I then plugged in, and now it works fine... My problem is that I have a faulty battery that makes my computer shut off all the time... for no reason!! I loved dell... when I was under warrenty... now, they won't even chat with me online!!!!

your problem looks so familar to me. i have the same problem a few months ago. the flashing LED light ( actually 10 times) is caused by Memory recognition failure. Try removing the memory and reinstall it. If it doesn't solve the problem. then try using one slot each time. I finaly found out that the slot A doesn't work anymore. Slot B is ok. now i solved the problem. hope it's useful for you guys.

I have an Inspiron 8600. The laptop itself works nice, BUT. I had issues with the battery/power-supply in the beginning. Solved it eventually by knowing that: DELL seems to have some protecionistic vision on their laptop (AND power supplies): apart from supplying power, the power-supply also sends a digital signal to your laptop identifying itself as a DELL power-supply. (That's why there is an extra pin in the power-supply connector--> outside of the connector: ground, inside of the connector: +Vcc, pin: digital signal). If this signal is not received by the laptop, it won't charge the battery and it will throttle to lower CPU speed. So if there is no workaround for this, you will not be able to use third-party power-supplies, at least not for the inspiron 8600. Greetz, Tom.

First, thanks to all those who have taken the time to share their frustrations and fixes/results. I have an 8600 that no longer recognizes that any of 3 AC power adapters are connected to it. I've cleaned the contacts and tried different cords/supplies, but with no success. Question: does anyone know if it's possible to just change out the AC power supply connection or do I have to replace the whole mother board? THANKS!

Very nice !!!! I started reading this page from top to bottom and the problem i was having is nothing would happen when i it the power button with or without the batter and adapter. When pluging in the adapter it would just blink the battery light. I took that panel off and the Plug underneath that plugs into the MB was loose I reseated it and put the plate back on and all is working well. btw I do have the correct adapter for this 8600 (4.62A). Thanks again :)

Power Issues...

My 8500 works on battery power, but not when plugged in. I just received a brand new adapter (4.62A) and still nothing. It won't charge the battery or power the laptop. The battery is only 2 months old. The weird thing is that I purchased a 3rd party adapter from CompUSA and it works when I remove the battery (it won't charge the battery--but it's not designed to according to the adapter instructions.) Dell claims that the problem is with my Mother Board. I'm not convinced since the other adapter powers my laptop. Any ideas?

8600 LCD issues...

My 8600 also has the LCD problem mentioned above. The backlight flashes opon pressing the start button (and nothing else happens, display remains black). It happened the first time I pulled it of the docking station - after it had been docked for a few days. Called support, just got the usual you'd expect from their techology-illiterate, Engrish speaking staff. Re-seated (and eventually replaced) the internal video cable, still no luck. Can anyone confirm that replacing the LCD panel will fix this? I don't want to shell out $550 AUD for a non-fix...
I don't think it's the video card (ATI mob Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo), as the external display works fine (been using it for 15 months now), both the D-Sub and DVI (when docked).

Never had a problem with the ac adaptors (65W or 90W) though...

WOW, after reading all posts i decided to EBAY a 90w adapter for my inspiron 8600. I have not used it for the last year or so. I'll let you know if it works. The problem I had was that the battery would not charge like many of you. But, when I plugged the AC adapter in, the computer would not turn on as well. Hopefully when I get the new adapter, all will be well again. I have been wanting to get a new labtop, but hopefully this will save me from spending another 1k. Peace.

PS thanks to DARRIN and all the others that posted w/ the adapter problem

Glad to hear I'm not alone.

Brought my 8600 two and a half years ago. one year out of warranty the HDD died, but worse is the "Power adapter type cannot be determined" error message on start up about 3 months ago - got it straight after flashing the bios up to the newest versuin

Now it runs at half speed, the battery is flat and unchargable, not to mention other eratic behaviour.

This was NOT docking station related as I don't use one, but I am using the 3.34A adapter. It seems even the 90W one doesn't apparently fix it.

Dell says £300 to have motherboard replaced!

I am not sure if the 90W is bad, but I am going to return it. All the info I have read so far the higher power adapter should work as long as its a Dell. Anyone have any input on this?

My 8600 suddenly decided that it didn't want to turn on ever again. Took Dell 3 weeks before they finally said I needed a motherboard replacement, and that the out of warranty department would get back to me. Guess what? They never did! I had to phone them 6 times before they put me through to some spare parts supplier, and now I'm getting a new motherboard tomorrow, but I have to change it myself. That whole ordeal cost me £285!

Doubt I'll buy Dell again. Also what the hell is the point of outsourcing when the people who work in the Indian call centre can barely speak English?
Gravatar # re: Dell Inspiron 8600 Issues
Posted by Dave on 4/5/2006 5:48 AM
Yep, I got the same Indian call centre. They were pretty good, but it did take a couple of weeks to get back to me with the quote. £325 all up and they only guarantee the motherboard for 3 months!!

Seriously considering selling the 8600 for spare parts on Ebay. Pity as the machine itself is good (despite the 5650 graphics card), but I don't trust the motherboard.

I, too have the 'unrecognised ac adaptor' issue. This is my wife's laptop which is now outside warranty. Our pet rabbit ate through the low voltage cable. I spliced the cable back together (all 3 connections) and now the PSU is not recognised. I also own a 9300 that has the 90 W PSU. I get the same problem when I plug this one in also. I can't believe that the 'data' connection on the 8600 motherboard is so fragile - at the very worst it might have got a 19v glitch when the cable was bitten through. I have never seen a piece of equipment that doesn't have buffered digital inputs. There MUST be another way around this without replacing the motherboard!

over the past couple of months i have have read many of the posts on this site looking for a potential fix for my D800 that no longer powers on. I have tried checking many of the things that have been listed above, but I have had no luck to this point. I am very curious about article that I ran across that was giving a review of the D800 motherboard. Here is the link to this article. http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.html?i=1801
if you scroll down the page you will see one section where the reviewer shows a picture of a jumper wire that has been attached to the motherboard they are reviewing. I am wondering if they happenend to get a motherboard that has had one of the power issues that we are experiencing. I have a spare motherboard and I have been attempting to do this solder trick as well to see if this may be the fix for power loss on these machines. If any of you knows anyone who may be good with soldering you may want to have someone try this. I do not know if this is the fix, but I think this shows that Dell knew there was a problem with this board and developed a workaround. IF someone does try this and it works can you please post your success story here. when looking at the website you can see this picture. It will be the 3rd picture after you see a penny next to an internal bluetooth adapter. user291954@yahoo.com

My 8600 is dead. I can't even start the damn thing. I called tech support (our source buddies) . They said my mother board needs to replaced and estimation is around $450. Also he said if I had to buy the same laptop new it is going to cost me $1300. Who the hell are going to spend $1300 on that cheapo crap. I told him that I got it $750 after rebates also pointed those guys to some sites where he can get laptop deals like that.
He started giving me all the crap about getting latest BOIS with new replaced mother board. B**ls**T. Those guys can't under how stuff works here.

After a day I called them back, the tech support guy said it is going to cost me $35 nominal fee for troubleshooting the issue and to give the same crap answer that one of his buddies gave.

If there is nothing wrong with mother baord why would it die just like that.

I have problems with my display as well. Only difference is that mine is not going blank but it stays black all the time. It seems that the screen is just not working anymore. Is it possible that this has to do with the circuit as well or is it something else? Can somebody tell me more.

What happened is simple. I use the 8600 at home, it stands on the kitchentable and never moves. One evening I switched it of and the next morning i switched it on and the screen didn't work anymore. It stay's black all the time.

I have the computer for 2 years and 3 months and I only had a 1 year warrenty so I wont expect much from Dell. Or do they fix problems like this. How else to fix it?

Jesse, I had the exact same problem as you. Your video card has most probably died too. (overheating?) Mine did and i was lucky enough to have 4 days of warranty left. (Its about a year old) Other than having the same problem with Microsoft Office 2003 as Jehu and the frequent crashes when working with applications dealing with shockwave and flash files (Macromedia Director), and even mozilla, it was a great laptop that could even handle 3d games like battlefield 2 decently.

the tech came over to change my video card and it was working all over again. (apparently it was a refurbished or repaired model... looked very used!) You may want to check around online websites that offer dell spare parts, coz as far as I know, paying dell good $$$ to simply change you video card with some second hand junk that who know would last how long is just simply to worth the time and money.

My inspiron 8600 is about 2-3 years old. recently the screen stopped working. It was working fine. I walked away for a bit and eventually the screen saver had come on. After a while I think the screen went to sleep. When I was ready to work on it again, I couldn't get the screen to wake back up. The display looked black then white. I turned off the computer and restarted with the same results. I am able to hook it up to an external monitor and everything looks ok but the laptop display turns white and colored lines appear running vertically on the screen. What is causing this?

I feel your pain. I've had my system board replaced three times in 18 months on my Inspiron 8600. I still have 18 months left on the warranty. I've tried to get Dell to replace it, but they won't. At least I have my trusty Inspiron 8200 as a backup. I just swap the hard drive and keep on working.

BTW, a Dell tech told me that as long as I reference the original dispatch number, they will continue to fix this problem as long as I own the laptop, since it's a known issue. I'm not holding my breath, however. I've never been so glad I paid extra for the three year warranty.

I am a Certified PC Consultant & also own an Inspiron 8600. This laptop has been nothing but headaches. I paid top dollar for one of the most poorly designed laptops ever. I too have replaced the mobo after owning it for only 1 month. Now after the warranty has expired the mobo is shot again. It is definitely due to the mobo flexing on a weak housing. I have serviced at least (5) clients with the same problem. You would think that Dell, a huge company would take the blame & offer a recall or a credit for these pieces of sh_t!!! I will never buy a Dell laptop again! Besides they like to outsouce thousands of jobs to other countries that AMERICANS should have!!! Obviously they are trying to cut every possible corner to increase profit, & now it's greatly reflecting their quality of products.

I have an Inspiron 600m which just went out of warranty (always seems to happen that way). I get a blinking led which tells me there is a battery issue. It also blinks in the 1/3/5 leds on the battery itself. No power to turn it on. Unless there needs to be a working battery in the unit for it to work on AC? You would think the system sees the AC adapter because of the blinking led but I guess Dell codes each unit to the adapter shipped. Boy that sucks. Anyone know how to jumpstart these things when they act up on a stupid AC detection issue?

Wow, all these problems with the Inspiron 8600. I've had a few myself that I haven't even seen mentioned in here.

Firstly, the PC has been wrong since day one. Dad decided to buy the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro for it, as he wanted to do a little gaming on it. When we first started playing games, every 30 minutes or so, the screen would turn all checkered and be a different colour every time it happens. Sometimes red, sometimes yellow, while etc etc, and you have to turn it off by the power button. It still does it today, but much more quickly. My Dad did contact Dell about this, but they didn't really want to know because it only happened when we were gaming. So in the end we gave up and its never been fixed. Why sell a Top-of-the-range card at the time and not expect us to play some games on it?

Recently, it has been handed down to me and I've figured it was due to the card overheating, as alt-tabbing out of a game every 5 minutes or so, to let it cool down, stopped the problem.

I've also had more problems with the card, all the graphics settings screwed up, but thats a software issue i suppose.

The problems continue. The fan won't turn up from the low fan speed anymore, so in games the GPU reaches 105C.

We've also had a Dell mouse driver problem. We uninstalled it, and the mouse was running smooth again.

Never again am I buying a Dell, unless they make thier computers considerably more reliable...

Woah .. reading this forum makes me shudder ...

I`ve had a Dell inspiron 8600 for over 2 years - no probs until this week when the screen went dead.

I have an international next business day warranty .. and am glad of it because im out of the UK just now but Dell have agreed to service the laptop onsite with a new LCD and whatever else it needs .. although it will be within 2 weeks, because theres no parts in Latin America for my euro dell available just now . Dell UK e support told me they could do nothing for me, and stopped answering my emails. Nice guys, huh ? but I will be back in the UK soon .. and my warranty still has 200 days to run ...

I guess I will just have to settle for that, but its far from "next business day" service ....

in the meanwhile with an external monitor, im transferring all data to an external drive ...

I`ve had a pretty good time with my 8600 but I don`t think I will get another Dell ... probably a new HP laptop or something else ....

Wow!! I can not believe Dell is having this many problems with their computers. No wonder their sales are going down. Anyway, I am also experiencing a similar problem mentioned above. Today I went to work - pluged the computer in and everything went well. About 3 hours later I noticed the battery indicator on the taskbar is showing and I noticed the green light on the AC adapter is off. I tried unpluging it and pluging it back in. NOTHING but the very much dreaded continous BEEPs. I sent dell an email about the problem and they replied saying that I need to get a new AC adapter.
I was so angry - anyway I thought it would be nice to add an extra "Not happy comment"

Having the same LCD problem going blank as a number of others. I believe it's the cable to the display shorting out (see Michael post 12/22/05). Has anyone attempted replacing this cable? The cable comes off the display easily but I'm not sure how easy it will be to get it disconnected from the base.

Any help would be appreciated..

well to update you all on my Inspiron 8600 woes ....

Dell finally honoured my international next business day service agreement (12 days on from initial request) and replaced the LCD. All was well except the power supply was acting up and the laptop BLEW an external cable modem. Turned out, the power supply was bad, wouldnt charge the battery, etc ...

3 days later, Dell visited me again and provided a new power supply ... it worked well, but promptly BLEW two more modems as soon as I connected them to the laptop (Second time I caught some of the discharge myself, burn on my hand)

On contacting Dell again, they decided to replace the motherboard - which comes tomorrow (so i will let u know how i get on then)

we are 16 days on since i originally reported this to Dell, and you know what ? I told them it had power problems in the first phone call .. but no no no .. smartass dell knew best and it was only the LCD and I had to give 3 different reports to actually get the parts fixed (hoping the new mobo will stop the blowing up of the modems)

I say Dell have violated the international next business day warranty ... not a good ad for their warranty at all .. and i have witnesses to the modems blowing and tomorrow, when the service guy replaces the motherboard, I`m gonna film it and see what happens while he is here when i reconnect the internet to the laptop thru the lan port .. if it blows, that movie is gonna be on the web.

so, if a lawyer wants to see my burnt hand covered at the moment in burn cream, and look at how long dell took to honour my next business day warranty ... that`s fine ...

and to all u other users - better beware of those dell laptops ... they might just give u a shock in more places than the wallet ....

IF ANYONE ELSE HAS PROBLEMS WITH DELL WARRANTY SERVICE PLEASE POST THEM ....

What about this solution?

The plug looks damaged like the cables of the ac/dc adaptor.

Hi,
thx for all the info.
I have my DELL Inspiron 8600 for 1.5 years now. Still working fine with "wrong" power-supply (65W).
The only thing is, since i dropped it (shame on me) the external graphic port won't work anymore... I thought about getting the docking station before trying to fix this...
Since this will also get me the correct power (90W), there is no danger? Or do I have to stick with "never change a running system"?

well, now that I`m, back online because of my sucky Dell laptop blowing the internet connection again, I can report the Dell service guy attended my inspiron 8600, replaced the motherboard, and it promptly blew up cable modem number 5 via it`s LAN port connection.

Cable company will not replace the modem under guarantee now - so they say, and my laptop has went back to Dell to be tested.

This is about 18 days on since I first reported the problems to Dell, on an international next business day warranty and even when that laptop comes back, don`t think I will be ever connecting it to a modem again.

Service guy reckons I should get a replacement but I wonder ... Dell seem a real bunch of shysters when it comes to honouring their so called next day warranty ...

Blimey. What a can of worms.

My 8500 has been fine for 3 years now, on a 3.43a brick. For the last 12 months I have been running this with a D-Dock (even though it isn't supposed to work) with no problems. I use it also undocked on customer sites, but only connected to a brick. The battery life is abysmal so I rarely run on battery power.

I was looking to upgrade the gpu to a Radeon 9600, but maybe its best left alone! I am getting a 2405fpw to use with the 8500, I'm just hoping it will work OK.

Hey suresh kumar, I had that issue with an old adapter. It did that just before it started shutting off randomly. No light, no power.
I was under warranty, have replaced two AC adapters, on my 3rd in 2.75 yrs. Not sure what to think of it exactly, but they seem like they aren't made to handle a long term beating.

Sorry for the long post, but here goes.

My motherboard indeed died 1 year and 3 months after purchase, being a shade under 3 months out of warranty. The entire computer would not do anything in my case, and I don't have money to replace this easily. In retrospect I would NEVER buy any laptop ever again without a 3 year warranty, even though I've happily used my 8 year old IBM laptop for the last 3 months for most tasks, while I've been pulling my hair out with the Dell.

So Dell's first reaction was for me to purchase an extended warranty for $Au1200!!! (~$US900!!!), which would be enough to get me a brand new Dell laptop with a 3 year warranty, so I wasn't at all happy with that response. They also suggested replacing the motherboard would cost around $Au700, at which point my heart sank.

People on this blog talked about legal action, so I took it up with NSW department of fair trading (in Australia). Their website shows examples of an Australian (or at least NSW) law for what is known as an implied warranty. The general example is just because a $3000 fridge only has a one year warranty, it's an expensive fridge so should last well beyond that warranty without any issues. A $500 fridge however may not have the same implied warranty on it as it's a cheap fridge. I figured my $2200 laptop was a worthwhile cost, so I rang them and explained my issues.

Dell contacted me worried about the fair trading involvement and offered half price parts and no labour or pickup costs, which I agreed to, as it would be around $Au300-$350 from estimates. They then picked up my laptop (after a couple of week wait) and quoted me $Au800+ as they confirmed a new motherboard was needed, of course missing the fact a 50% discount had been agreed upon. In fact they had no record on file about the agreed discount, and when I spoke to the guy who gave me the discount he mentioned a 15% discount, and quoting and pickup costs to be paid by me as well. I HATE DELL.

I decided to try to sort it out with Dell still, so I followed up on the quote, and put forward that I was extremely unhappy with Dell at this point. BING! That's the magic word!!! Here's what followed (general flow of conversation, not exact):
DELL: We can offer you $Au600 for an extended 1 year warranty?
ME: No, I'm going back to fair trading.
DELL: How about a 2 year full extended warranty with every warranty option for $Au600?
ME: Well that sounds pretty good actually, but it's still a lot of money. Can you send me a quote, as I really need to think about this.
DELL: Well, we'd like to keep you happy and settle this now, so why don't you tell us how much you would pay for the 2 year warranty?
ME: How about $450.
DELL: OK I will arrange that for you, to keep you happy...blah blah blah, isn't Dell great to you etc etc. I will call you back after 5 minutes, I need to speak to my boss to confirm that deal.

5 minutes later the price had risen to $Au500 as the "absolute lowest we can go, blah blah blah", but I did get a fully inclusive 2 year warranty, including accidental, software and 1 day pickup, so I agreed. A couple of days later and the motherboard is replaced and keyboard is due to be replaced today, due to me accidentally breaking a key a couple of months beforehand.

So even though I've spent money I never intended to, and still don't think I should need to, I am fairly happy with the end result. I'd suggest to anyone in a similar situation that Dell does offer discounts to keep customers happy, so don't be afraid to work hard to get that satisfaction.

And just looking back, an earlier poster mentioned this:
"Recently, it has been handed down to me and I've figured it was due to the card overheating, as alt-tabbing out of a game every 5 minutes or so, to let it cool down, stopped the problem. "

I purchased a laptop lap stand to let air flow under the computer when gaming or working the computer hard. The temperature underneath the computer was almost enough to burn you before doing this, and I think a lot of Dell's problems with this laptop may have been due to overheating.

I've never had a desktop PC that's more powerful than the Dell, and yet there is no space for anything in there. It's simply too much power for it's own good. It's mostly the public's fault as they want lightweight, fully featured and powerful all in one cheap package. Dell delivered what people wanted most, but forgot to actualy work out whether this would be a good long term idea, rather than whether it would sell well.

I hope they are doing something about these issues with their latest offerings.

I have some relevant information to volunteer here regarding my Inspiron 8500 and the various AC adaptors I've used with it. I acquired the laptop used with a PA-10 supply that caused the 'not recognized' error and I've tried two other adaptors to date. here are the curious results:
PA-10 model NADP-90KB (90W)(TH-9T215-17971-32L-xxxx Rev A00)
Tried two of these with same result; not recognized error, system runs at reduced speed, battery does not charge.
PA-12 model PA-1650-05D (65W)(05U092-71615-3AE-xxxx Rev L04)
Unit is recognized as 65w power supply, charges battery, but CPU runs at reduced speed. CPU returns to full speed when running on battery.

just my two cents.

My Dell Inspiron 8600 does not:
Recognize the Power Cord.
Recognize the battery.
Charge the Batteries
And as of LAST NIGHT it does not
Power up or Start at ALL (totally DEAD HORSE).

This unit was purchased in May of 2004.

All of my work is on it for the last two years.

I tried a new 90W power supply. It did not work.

I am now going to remove the hard drive and install it into a DELL 2500 that has been on the shelf for the last two years. All it needs is a keyboard. (OH and It has a recall on the power cord)

Dell if you are listening: "You SUCK" and YOU owe me: a 90W power cord (4.62 A), A new battery, and a new motherboard you cheap S.O.B's.

Inspiron 8600:
My ac adapter died of reasonable causes, the the cable got worn away to the bare wire right next to the brick. It actually went bang! and fizzed up for a bit. (I had ordered a new adapter that very day, so I felt very pleased with myself.) The laptop went into low power mode, refusing to charge the battery etc etc.

The new adapter didn't work either. Nor did my brother-in-law's, his adapter was the exact same 65W one that I had.

I saw Darrin's post here, about the 65W/90W adapters. I had only used 65W until that point. I had another look at the faded sticker on the bottom of the laptop, and it said it wanted the 90W one! So I returned the 65W for a 90W (while waiting, I used a Kensington 120W thing that works on any laptop) but the 90W didn't work either.
None of the tricks here have worked for me.
I guess the mini-explosion must have blown something at the laptop end. Either that or the BIOS is refusing to change its mind about the adapter. Dell are known to have flaky BIOSes, apparently.
I'm going to take it to a repair guy next week, will post again if anything comes of it.

Thanks Darrin. Your information sounds logical and is probably the source of the problem. I suggest everyone find Darrin's comments and follow the instructions. More than likely, its a power input / output conflict. That's wha probably happened to the poor guy in national news whose Dell laptop exploded on him.

I bought Dell 8600 About 2 years ago (now out of warranty), I take great care of it and use it only to play MP3’s for my business. I have never put it online nor installed any other software other then PCDJ. I honestly have had only about one hundred working hours on it total. Two nights ago I left it plugged in overnight for the 1st time. I woke up to the LCD not working at all. After waiting about five hours to be transferred from the incorrect department to another incorrect department I finally got a human to talk to. I tried everything Dell Support department suggested to solve the issue. Their conclusion is the LCD is dead. After that great conclusion and six hours of waiting to talk to another department and four bad transfers, I was sent to their “Out of Warranty Department”. Their conclusion is to have them replace the LCD for $584.00. Great solution to my purchase of a $1500.00 computer, don’t you think? I stopped by a computer repair shop. They see a lot of Dells come in and they cannot say enough bad comments about Dell as a whole. I find it conveniently odd that just after warranties run out that all our Dells start malfunctioning regardless of the actual issue. If we can have reminders sent from our email software then Dell can set their computer to malfunction just outside the warranty date. Funny! Dell Corporation I will be joining any Class Action Suit that has or will be filled. You can set a reminder on that. Good News! “I heard” Dells stock dropped 12% in the last few days. Perhaps Michael Dell should $Pay$ more attention to his consumers or face bigger $Losses$ his consumer base and a grand judgment. P.S. I will spend the same number of hours rallying duped consumers as I do trying to fix my LCD. Good luck to all Dell paperweight owners.

Anyone having trouble simply putting your laptop into hibernate mode? I have the Inspiron 8600 which so far has experienced a failed hard drive(just shy of 1 year - warranty covered) and then the USB ports failed (but power is still possible, even tested ports on multiple bootable linux distros - after 1 year so no support ). After reinstalling a new hard drive with the Windows XP CD from Dell, I have not been able to get my hibernation to work. On my previous setup it worked fine. I did not notice right away since I don't use hibernate very often, so could have happened along the way or could have happened right from the start?

Any ideas on how I can get "hibernate" feature back?

Guys, I need help! The LCD display on my 8600 died 2 days ago. I'm researching the problem, and would like to replace the inverter and the backlight. I have removed the LCD from the laptop, and disassembled it. I see the inverter, but can't see the backlight (even after tracing the pink and white wires.

Can anyone point me to directions on how, where to find the backlight? Do I have to remove the back plastic of the LCD from the metal 'rim' holding the unit together? (There are many metal 'clips' holding the plastic in-place.)

Thanks,

Robert

Add my coin to the coffer.
My 90W psu died on my Inspiron 8500 series that I've had for atleast 3 years now. Quaintly enough my 3 year warranty expired at the end of june. I chose not to renew it because I work on computers and figured anything that went wrong I could fix myself for cheaper than a warranty renewal.

My 90W PSU went bonkers so that it would not recharge my batteries, only power the laptop via AC. After I ordered a new PSU from notebookparts.com (a LOT cheaper than dell direct) my laptop is back up and running, batteries charging and all.

I got lucky that my mobo wasnt the cause and that I didnt have to change the plug ports as mentioned elsewhere.

I'll be tossing out the old 90watt just incase it decides to melt down later on, it won't be taking any of my stuff with it.

Has anyone run into keyboard issues with the 8600. One of my keys, the '[', is stuck. I think it's some how mapped to the backspace key. It is possible to cheaply replace the keyboard? Thanks.

You get a keyboard for about $40 and replace it in 5 minutes. The documentation for replacing the keyboard can be found at:

SUCCESS!

After running my 8600 for almost 6 months at reduced speed and always plugged into the mains due to the "Power Adapter Type Cannot be Determined" error, the system is now fixed.

I was going to buy a new motherboard as that was the general prognosis from many people, but at a cost of £300 decided against it.

Just this week I tracked down a 90W 4.62 A brick off Ebay at £20 and thought "what the hell, will give it a try".

Plugged it in and first time my 8600 boots up fast and the battery starts charging (battery was flat and hadn't charged at all in 6 months).

I reccomend giving this route a try. My old 65 W power brick still worked, but would not charge the battery and kept the laptop running at reduced speed. The 90 W adapter made all the difference, despite a great many people's claim that the cause of my problems was a knackered MOBO.

Cheers,
Dave

I am glad to read that I am not alone!

After 2.5 years having nicely worked, I got the "AC power adapter not recognized"-message from my "Inspiron 8600" (65 W). So, I tried a 90W-adapter from a colleague, which worked fine, and I ordered a new one from DELL. But when I tested this new one (~three weeks later), I got the same "not recognized"-message again, and the one of my colleague did not work anymore, too. A docking station also shows the same message.

So, I bought a motherboard from ebay, which shows the same message, too! Does anyone still have an idea, because I nearly replaced the whole computer (may be the SpeedStep of the CPU) ? It is unbelievable...

Thanks,

Roland

Error code 2C00:031B and 2C00:021C . Our Inspiron 2200 keyboard is messed up. If you hit letter T, you get t5,y=y6, tab = ` and others such keys. The great Dell support team sold me a keyboard which lasted <1 hour. Computer is for a son in college which lasted 8 months. I guess the education here is don't buy from Dell and what makes a great paper weight?!.
If any one has a solution I'd listen.

For an update; now that I got a 90W power adapter that solved my problems, I have just today tried a new 65W PA-12 and it also works fine (charges battery, no error message etc).

Quite what goes wrong with the old power adapter, allowing it to semi-power and run the laptop but without charging, I don't know.

I am SOOOOO glad I bought the extended service warranties on this thing (8600 Inspiron).

I am in IT professional who needs my time and energy to fix other people's problems. So I bought the warranties and they have saved my a$$. Never had to ship the box back, always had service the next day in my home if needed. Had both touch\mouse issues as well as power issues. Had multiple mobos and keyboards replaced in my home.

I am also VERY aggressive with technical support and never let them tell me what to do. They work for me.

Spend the money for the at home service if you are highly dependent on your laptop for making money -- you won't regret it. I am getting ready to purchase another two years for $288.00.

Cheap insurance given all of the problems.

When it does black out with the power cord I can bring it back up by pressing function and F8, but then it goes back out seconds later.

Any ideas would be great.

I have an Inspiron 8500. One day I tried to boot it up and could not get it to recognize that it was plugged into power. At this point the battery had a charge and I was still able to use it, but could not get the power adapter to charge it. After a few hours the battery was drained and it wouldn't boot anymore because it didn't have any power. I bought a new power adapter hoping that would help, but it did not. Any ideas how I can fix this problem??

I've been working on software issues on an Inspiron 8600. They're fixed, but I noticed the AC adapter was not charging the battery. I ran the onboard hardware diagnostics, which pass both the battery and the adapter, but when I enabled the adapter post warning, I got the "adapter not recognized" warning. Been through all the Dell support site stuff on this problem, to no avail. This is a 90 watt PA-10 adapter, TH-0C2894-17971-37H-0772. The laptop works fine with the adapter plugged, but the battery is not charging (down to 32%).

From my observations, my Inspiron 8600 has very decent hardware (as far as performance goes: 333mhz RAM, 7200rpm HDD, ATI 9600 Mobility) and runs quite well, even with games made two years after I bought the machine. However, I have been unhappy with the way it is designed, and from some obvious cut corners. Over the last few months I have had increasingly bad luck as far as my power cable goes. First, it likes to slip out all the time. Then, I put it back in, and I usually get an annoying message which says "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation." --I use the adapter that *came* with my Inspiron. Incidently, my battery is perpetually at 3% charge. It is unfortunate, as many other people have perfectly fine AC adaptors and poor batteries, yet my battery works just fine. Also, I beleive the plastic which the Inspiron is built from is poor quality. After using it very often, and sometimes needing to carry it with one hand, I have had a stress crack occur on the right side just below the arrow keys. This crack has now grown down to the CD drive bay. My friend recently purchased an Inspiron 9400, and it is lighter (while being larger, and 17" WS as opposed to my 15") and the plastic is wealths sturdier. Other than the heat problem, everything else has ran rather well with my 8600.

I recently had the same issue that everyone after 3 years was having with their battery. It just simply stopped charging. I contacted Dell support and they told me that the 65 watt adapter i had was the required minimum and that i didn't need the 90 watt (even though the input specs on the back of the laptop specify 90 watts). I decided to go with what everyone else said here and purchased the 90w adapter.

Surprise surprise... my battery charges just fine now. I'm so mad at Dell right now. It's like they just don't want to take responsibility for packaging the wrong power adapter with the Inspiron 8600.

I have an 8600 for work and get the same error:

Your system is docked but the AC Power Adapter type cannot be determined.

Either undock or insert an appropriate adapter.

I called Dell and after a lengthy troubleshooting period, the tech says, "it sounds like you need to replace your docking station." So I got one really cheap on eBay and hooked everything up, only to get the same error message.

Oh, and I also replaced the adapter with a new one--still same message.

My 8600 won't run on the battery anymore cuz it's dead now and I can only use the laptop by plugging it directly into the wall on its own--no docking station.

This all started when I had a damaged cord on my AC adapter and got the message that it didn't recognize the adapter and to hit F3 to continue, but now that this has happened, I can't figure out how to "tell" the laptop that it HAS the right adapter and to move on!

Any suggestions??

Thanks!
Steve

Back to the original issue: I have found the fix.

I got the very same message the first time I tried to boot out of the dock after I had accidentally put it in the dock from a non-docked hibernation. I jacked with all sorts of stuff and ultimately decided it was NOT the Dell hardware, it was an issue with XP hardware detection and this was confirmed by putting a repair copy of SYSTEM in the CONFIG folder via Recovery Console (and, yes, you should back up every file in Config and Repair before you do anything in those folders).

The solution was then SO, SO simple!

I booted in the dock, went to Hardware Profiles, went to "Profile 1" (the original, non-docked profile) properties and specifically chose that this profile was "undocked". THAT was IT! Once I was booted out of the dock, I went back in and specifically chose "docked" for the "Docked" profile.

I been doing this stuff for 20 years and hadn't run into that one yet! Now you know.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600.

The problems I am having are:

1. It sometimes stalls on the Windows XP status screen.

2. Then when it manages to get passed that part of the boot process the cursor moves erratically and the computer makes many beeping noises. I am then unable to control the cursor and have to switch off the computer by pressing the power key. When I boot into safe made this problem does not occur.

Both these problems are intermittent. I may go for days without it occurring and sometimes it can occur 3 times a day when I boot up.

Have re-installed Windows XP and problem still persists.

Any help would be appreciated as I'm not sure if its hardware or a software problem.

I experienced the same exact problem as Mike on 7/22 -- my LCD screen died the other day and, after spending $50 for the pleasure of spending hours on the phone with support, I'm told a replacement screen costs over $500.

I've since bought a new laptop (a Toshiba) and would like advice on getting the data off my Dell hd...

I've hooked up a TV/pc monitor, but it doesn't display my icons or taskbar (only the cursor and background image).

I've also purchased a 2.5" hd enclosure, as recommended by Dell support, but it doesn't fit. The hd itself is connected to a curvy piece of the exterior of the laptop. I don't want to forcibly remove it.

Any suggestions?

For Amy McG who wants to recover data from the Dell hd, I suggest that the Apricorn EZ-Gig might be what you're looking for. It comprises a plug-in card for a laptop, software and a card-to-hd connector. I used it to copy files from a removed HD to a new, replacement HD I had put into the laptop. Worked perfectly for me

My 8600 suddenly shut down on me. Then it booted back up. Then shut down on me 5 minutes later then booted back up then shut down on me. Finally it stopped working. I brought it into a repair shop. They said it was a bad mother board electric supply. My 8600 would not boot up after that so I put it in my closet. 1 month later I decided to see if it would start. It started up and would shut down. When I plug in the power supply, it takes a few seconds for the battery light to come on. Then the fan started to run really fast and loud like I have never heard before. What is going on?

I have an inspiron 6000 and have now gone through 2 adapters in about 10 months. This 2nd time, the guy told me the motherboard would need to be replaced. I insisted they send me a new adapter; not sure what I'm going to do about the motherboard. I get onsite service, but who knows a) what they will replace it with (I don't want a refurbished one) and b) whether they'll screw anything up replacing it.

I told dell technical that to me, it seemed like a cord issue, because for about the last week before Dell stopped recognizing the cord (and thus, I stopped being able to charge the laptop), if I wiggled the powercord (where it attaches to the laptop) a bit, the system would recognize it and the battery would charge. That finally stopped working.

Any opinions?

-yesterday LCD died. Dells solution : new LCD for 326 Euros . I must say they really gave me help at the phone, but we couldn't find a way to revive the display. They will send a technician to my home, although i don't have home service

I have a Inspiron 8600 that is about three yers now and i bought it for a half year ago and it has work t perfectly untill for a week ago when it stops to charge the batteries, i have the PA-12 power supply.

So it looks like I start to get the same problem thatmost have that either is solved by a change of power supply tp 90W or a new 65W PA-12.
Could it be a loosen power supply connector on the motherboard?

What is the expected spec for the current drain

Is it not possible to have a maintance program that can tell what power source error that exists.

have anybody find a software program that can analyze what is wrong or give direction whar should be done next.

i have extended warranty on this machine so i should phone Dell, but by reading this it looks like that everything can happen includinging changing mother power board to changeing powers supply .

IT MUST BE A WAY TO METODUC FIND THE SOURVE OF THIS POWER ERROR or not??

Oh, and 5160's adaptor is 130watt. 65watt will charge the battery on 8600 but even when the battery is fully charged, it won't boot up. And I can't charge my 5160 with this 65watt adaptor. So I'm not sure if 95watt is sufficient for 8600, I'm gonna get 95watt above from ebay I guess.

I don't know the totally specifics of why it worked, but for my 8600, changing the power supply did the trick for the "The computer is docked and only battery power is detected" error.

I just swapped with my docking station one. Although, then the docking station stopped working. So, there is something wrong with it... or it's the wrong one, being the voltage requirements listed on the laptop are different then what the power cord says.

If your voltage and junk on your power cord don't match your computer, stop using it, even if it's the one that came with your computer. Call Dell and let them know about this little discrepancy, and if they give you a hard time, and say it doesn't matter... ask them where they got their electrical engineering degree.

my Inspiron 8600 won't turn on. Had already some problems with the battery few month ago and it has replaced once until the battery went dead again. I had to use the power supply and now it stops displaying anything (for the 2nd time at least) and it is out of warranty. What can I do ?

Does anyone know how much a repair would cost ?
Very disappointed !

I purchased my 8600 in april of 2004. Since that time, the drive broke in april 2005. It was not even a crash, the drive just stopped working completely. They sent me a new drive.

By January 2006 the drive crashed again. This time it was fixable in recovory console and no replacement was needed.

By August 2006 the crappy power adaptor became so worn that it stopped working completely. A replacement was sent by dell.

By January 2007 the power adaptor became lose inside the system and I would have to
wiggle it in order to get power. It was obviously a lose solder joint on the motherboard.

My Dell PA-13 AC adapter was acting up, and the latpop was not recognizing it so I found a website www.laptopsanddesktops.com where I bought the cord which goes from the adapter to the compuer ( DC Cord ) for $9.99 plus $5 shipping. After installing the Cord my problem was gon. The only problem is that you have to open the AC Adapter and use a soldering Iron to do it.

I've got 2 problems with my 8600

1) after buying the laptop new and running it for about month it quit charging the battery, same as many of you...but my question is shouldn't it charge the battery when the computer is off (because mine doesn't), or will buying the 90w adapter solve the problem?

2) when I move the computer the screen freaks out and then freezes the computer. The screen generally ends up with vertical lines about an inch wide which alternates between what was on the screen and just garbled up mess on the next line...I have the laptop COMPLETELY taken apart right now looking for signs of bad connections etc. but dont find them...

I have a dell inspiron 8500. It was dropped in december, and consequently I had to have the motherboard replaced (still under warranty, thankfully). Since I had that replaced, the computer has randomly shut down, and then it won't turn back on for who knows how long. Sometimes it will turn back on in 5 minutes. Other times it takes 12 hours. I brought it back to the computer shop and they couldn't replicate the problem...
Any ideas?

I've had my Inspiron 8600 3 years almost to the day. I love this machine.

It has gone with me in a backpack across country on planes, trains and in automobiles.. and a Bus once or twice!

I've had this lappy running straight for over 35 days with out a reboot.. using it everyday for all sorts of uploading/downloading/gaming/what ever.. TV Out, dvd burning, playing my guitar thru.

This book is die hard! EXCEPT

My hard drive failed - My fault prolly, way to much downloading/uploading from a laptop...

Upgraded to a mucho better HD - presto - fixed.

The LCD inverter is out.. I need to replace. Once again prolly my fault, as i said ive had this laptop run for months at a time with out a reboot..

This thing is a TROOPER

When I turn on my computer I get a screen that is blurry with all kinds of lines on it, but after it warms up seems to be ok. Replaced the battery didn't work. Sounds like it could either be the video card or LCD screen from what i've read. Am I correct?

For the power adapter problems, it's either a universal problem with the power module on the motherboard, the power jac kitself, although not great odds on that one, or it's the battery. My girlfriend is having the problem of it not charging. Take the laptop to a store and have them test the power module with a mulitmeter. And the power jack, lastly there are different makes of battery you can apply to this laptop, I suggest getting one ad seeing if this works, alternatively try a friends battery if they have the same laptop.

Or get a better notebook. I have heard countless problems with the Inspiron 8600.I suggest and can fully recommend HP. Hope this helps people.

I love my Dell 8600. Like others on this site I've taken it all over the place, on planes, buses, trucks, etc. It's had a REALLY hard life! Up until today it's been rock solid. I've had it for almost exactly three years.

Today however, I think the LCD inverter has died. The screen has gone dull (almost to the point of not being able to see it). I've taken it apart and all the cables seem to be OK. The weird thing is if i leave it for a while it boots up and the LCD is fine, but after a short time it goes dull again. For the next couple of hours it will work, then die, work, then die again. This makes me think that maybe it isn't the inverter after all.

Can someone please explain what actually happens with the inverter is faulty? Does it work "some of the time" or does it just die and that's the end of it?

Is it normal that an inverter only lasts three years (which seems to be the norm here)?

For those who have been bagging the Dell - this machine has been FANTASTIC to me up until now. I've NEVER had a problem. I've beaten the hell out of it and it's always come back kicking. It's just a pain that it has to muck up now!

Chris!

UPDATE: (scroll up 9 posts)

1) I was able to fix the screen problem, there are 3 or 4 "spacer nuts" that hold the video card off the mother board and 2 of them had come loose from the mother board (they were originally attached with some liquid metal...not solder but something like it) so I super glued them to the mother board and that fixed my screen problem!

2) ? I still don't have an answer on the charger. If the charger is the problem with the battery not charging while the machine is on, wouldn't it still charge the battery while the machine is shut off? What have the people experienced that changed out there chargers?

I have an inspiron 8500 and when im sitting here playing a game, on the net, or just sitting here, the fan comes on... no problem there, but after a short while it sounds like the fan kicks into high gear and then 10 seconds later the whole computer shuts down. It's never done this before... and the fan has never gone crazy like that before.

I love my Inspiron 8600 too! =) I've had it for about 4 years now and have never had any problems with it... until yesterday.

I'm not sure what I did, but for some reason, the screen has many small rectables all over it.. I thought it might have been the lcd pin connection to the computer, but when I tried connecting it to an external monitor, it's still the same (many, many little white rectangles evenly distributed all over the screen, so I can hardly make out what's behind it). There doesn't seem to be any backlight problems and I can still get into windows. I just can't read anything on the screen, though i can barely make out icons.

Any ideas of what's gone wrong with my beloved laptop? Could it be that my video card is just dying?

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions!

Power on problems

Its the power button and probably not the battery or adapter.
I fixed it... just pry open the center power on module (blue strip) from the left side and the cable is loose from the right end.
See the keyboard link at this url http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins8500/en/8600cr/sm/index.htm

I've enjoyed a dell inspiron 8600 for 4 years now. But recently I started to nocice lcd problems. During 2-3 weeks after the system start up the screen remainded red for a few minutes, after that it would go brighter and working as usual. However yesterday I could barely see anything, it was almost black. I wonder whether it's the inverter or the backlight (http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop_6.htm). Did anybody have a similar problem with dell lcd? Thanks!

PA-10 90W adapter will suffice.
The 65W adapter, that was originally packaged with the 8600, could lead to a fried motherboard for several reasons. The new adapter shouldn't cost that much off ebay though.

OK, I have seen some people with the problem where you go to turn it on, the power lights come on for 5 seconds, then it shuts off. I am having the same problem!.. Nobody has addressed what may be causing it, or how to fix it. I really wanna get this working again. I troubleshooted everything such as the Hard drive, fan, video card, internet cards, and ram. The machine does the same thing with each of these components removed, so there has to be a problem with the motherboard, power board... if there is such a thing... or... I dont know what else. Any Suggestions????

Power on: 2 led's light up, speakers pop, fan does not turn on, video card fan does not turn on, hard drive does not turn on, and shuts off within 5 seconds.

sucks

My Dell Inspiron 8600 is getting power but it goes straight to a white screen with different coloured vertical lines. I've tried reseating the vid card but it hasnt fixed the problem. Seems to me that either the Video card or the motherboard have died. I'm hoping its just the video card.

Purchased mine in late 2004.
Hard drive crashed in February 2005. Fixed using recovery console.
Crashed again in June 2005. DEAD!
Bought a new hard drive just recently and did a fresh Windows XP install. AT first it seemed fine then 2 days later something else is bogging the system and it's not a virus.

Please, tell me which hard drive do you recommend to upgrade (> 100 GB).

When I turn on the computer it goes to a white screen, flashes about three times and then very narrow colored vertical lines appear on the white background.

The keyboard still works since I can get caps and number lock lights to go on and off and I can adjust screen brightness. Also the hard drive light blinks as if it is still working.

I saw Phil had a similar issue. Any ideas>

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600, and it has worked flawlessly the last 4 years, but yesterday the display started to act weird, and a reboot caused a complete crash...

Now the computer boots on 1 out of 10 tries, and the fans doesn't come on... (CPU and GPU fans...)

I have it disassembled now, and when it boots, I can see that the fans just move very little, and then stops... If I put heavy load on it, it doesn't start either...

At a point of heavy load to the GPU, the display starts acting weird again - sort of freezes... (And the GPU heatpipe is VERY hot) - So I turn the power off...

Does anyone know what may be wrong? - Why doesn't the fans start?`- And can I set the fans to "always on" somewhere? - I have checked the BIOS, and it doesn't have it as an option... (it seems)

I've taken the fans out, and powered them manually with 5V, and they both work... (And, yes, I've cleaned the heatpipes!)

Thanks! - Daniel

My LCD went out a couple weeks ago. I got an inverter for it put it in and wammo! Nothing! So now I'm going after the backlight itself if I can find a guide or some type of reference on how to get to it without completely destroying the LCD. Then again I've got nothing to lose. I'm going for it! I'll let you know how it goes.

This computer has been rock solid for me until this so I am not going to give up on it. I even used it for CAD work in its early days and it handled that just fine.

Had my 8600 for just over three and a half years. HDD died after one year, but was glad to replace it with a larger one (£80). AC adapter and battery died after three years (£100). Plastic surrounding the LCD broke a few months ago; replaced (with backlid for £60) with parts from these guys: .portables.co.uk

Latest problem though is that the backlight stopped working. I can still see stuff on the screen (just!), and it works with an external monitor. I've just taken apart the screen and tested the output to the backlight from the inverter with a multi-meter. No output at all, so I'm thinking it's perhaps the inverter.

Looking around for the the best price.

(continued)

Got the inverter from an Ebay store (ORIGINALPARTSGLOBAL) in the States. It was £15 plus £7 postage. The prices I was getting quoted from UK suppliers were between £60 and £100!

Although it was compatible with my 8600, it was a slightly different size, so I wasn't able to screw it in, but the fit is so snug that it doesn't move around. Fired it up and it works beautifully!

This post is for all of you who have an 8600 that refuses to turn on. This is the second time that my 8600 has crashed. I press the power button- the green power indicator light turns on for 5 seconds- and then....nothing! No sounds, no fan, no activity what so ever. I took my Dell to 2 different technicians to get two opinions regarding what had happened to my Dell. Turns out the motherboard died and it is so costly to repair it that I "might as well get a new machine." Here is what all of you need to do- first, make sure your battery and AC adapter work. Now, remove the AC adapter and leave the Dell only with the battery. Now, take a little screw driver and open compartment C. That is where the memory chips are stored- 2 black chips side by side. Remove the chips completly. Now that they are out, press the power button on your machine. If you do not hear the machine beep 3 times or make any kind of beeping noise, this means that you have a major internal hardware problem (most likely a motherboard problem). If you are no longer under warranty, it's true that you might as well get a new machine because this problem costs about $600-$700 to fix. I would take it into a technician first to get their opinion before you give up on it though.

G'day !

I am very dissatisfied with the 8600, I just replaced the whole key section and now some keys are popping off. My 8600 has the problem very similar to Daniel Klejnstrup.

Started 2 days ago, the laptop freeze about 2 minute after turn on from cold status, and usually can be shutdown by press power button after freeze(I mean normal shut down process, not press and hold power button to force it off), and yes, no fan is running at all. And normally when it just freezed and turned off, you can not turn it back on. The 3 green LED on for 3 second and then turns off, that's it.

I checked the fan on the corner, runs on 5V power. Haven't check the other fan yet. It looks like a thermal management issue, not sure it is a faulty thermal sensor or the motherboard.

Anyway, ordered a HD encloser and looking for a new laptop deal.

For those of you that have the issues with the powering on and then the power light comes on for a min then turns off. It's not a bad Motherboard. You need to reseat your cpu. Find a manual to help you and turn the screw to release the CPU. Take it out. CAREFULLY! Then put it back in tightly and lock into place. I have one that a did that on and it's working great now. Except the USB doesn't work... Lol.

Unbelievable the amount of people having problems with this POS laptop. After heavily troubleshooting my own Inspiron 8600 and following the suggestions in this thread I found my issue to be with the motherboard. If your main power LED light comes on briefly then dies put your ear up to the laptop and turn it on again then listen for any odd noises. In my case you could hear a high pitched clicking noise emitting from the motherboard. Don't be fooled into thinking you have a battery/ac adapter issue without first pushing the battery check button on the battery itself and verifying the green LED on the AC adapter lights up when plugged into an outlet. Also, do not waste your time contacting Dell if you're out of warranty - find the parts you need via craigslist or ebay and install them yourself. If you are not tech savvy you can find someone local that will be happy to install the parts for a fair price. Hope this helps someone, good luck.

Dell 8600
Does anybody know the wiring pinout of the AC adapter pa10 OR PA12? What is the center pin used for?

Wow, very interesting reading all these comments about the 8600. I bought mine in Feb 2004, within a month after purchase, my HD crashed, Dell sent me a new one which worked until a month ago. I bought a new one and thought all was well. It works great. However, I am on my 3rd power adaptor since I purchased. My problem has been the cord fraying at the neck where the adaptor tip is. I bought the second one from Dell and decided to get my third on cheaper from ebay. I have only had that adaptor since Sept. It was working great, but I noticed that it seems to be loose and then flashes between battery power and ac power. Well turned it on the other day and it did not recognize the ac adaptor at all. The light works on the adaptor, but not showing it connected to the computer. I have been told this is a motherboard problem and after calling around have been told it could be fixed for about $250 or might not be a part that can be sodered back on. Has anyone tried this fix, is is fixable or will I have to replace the entire motherboard??? Going to check the power requirement on the back of the laptop to see if this is the problem as well. I also notice that the fan doesn't work anyway to get a p/n on that?

My Inspiron 8600 goes through the boot sequence the screen goes blank, but the mouse is still visible and responsive over the blank screen, but nothing else, no key strokes etc. It of course is out of warranty. Am I over looking the simple fix or is this a serious issue that will just about put me at my wits end with the Dell portable machines. Please help, I did not see this specific post here.

Thanks for the useful tips. I purchased my Dell Inspiron in Feb 2004. battery stopped charging since Oct 2007, being the root cause of many problems that occured later. I thought my battery died and ordered a new one. This one also did not work. It simply did not work. After several hours of "Technical Support" over the phone, Dell folks suggested the motherboard be replaced. After reading the blogs above, I realized - in BIOS mode, the AC adopter was not being recognized. I called DELL again and mentioned this. They repeatedly suggested that I should replace the motherboard. I struck to my argument that there is a serious problem with the AC adopter as it died, system is not recognizing. Dell finally send me AC adopter and Bingo, it worked. My battery is charging as usual and my system is working fine.

Please check your AC adopter and replace if you experience battery issues. Do not hurry and replace the expensive motherboard.

Please help!I bought an 8600 in Oct 04.I use my computer 6-8 hrs/day.About 3 days ago I noticed that my battery was not fully charging.I turn off and plug in to ac power overnight and it is still at 99% charged. Is this a sign of problems to come? After reading the previous postings today I checked the adapter and see that it is the 65W model.Could this be the problem? Also, I have noticed that my computer is taking FOREVER to start up now.Can this be related?I'm at a loss and wonder if anyone can tell me my first step?I need my computer and fear that it will only go downhill from here. Any advice??
