First off, I want to start this post with an 'Arrrggggggg!!!!!!'. Much better. I have an Inspiron 8600 from Dell. The machine is awesome, I have never had a laptop that ran so fast. It is the perfect machine for a consultant who has to travel to the client site, but still come home and dock that machine to work. So what is the issue? Well you remember I said I get to come home and dock the machine. Well in October, right before a trip to Redmond, my machine decided that it didn't ever want to be away from it's dock and did not boot unless it was docked. I would receive the friendly error:

The computer is docked and only battery power is detected.
This can happen if the power adapter is unplugged,
or the computer is not properly connected to the
docking station.

Joy oh joy, that experience was fun. The solution after making one tech cry and another hangup on me, I got a tech to send me a box to send the machine back to them and they replaced the system board. TEN DAYS Later, they shipped the machine with new board and everything was good again.

Fastforward to today. I have plans to be onsite with a client tomorrow. I have pulled my VPC on the machine and decided to watch a movie with my wife while I finish up some extra work. I disconnect the machine from the docking station and proceed to go downstairs. Once I arrive, I boot up the machine to get my lovely error message again. You got to be kidding me, one month after spending 13 days without a laptop (3 days to arrive last time) I have to do this process all over again. S#IT!!!!!! So I get Dell back on the phone, and one hour after disconnecting the machine from the docking station and plugging it in with every possible scenario, they want me to send my machine back to them for another "10 or so days", so they can replace the system board again. This time is different though they kept telling me, because they are going to look at the docking station too. Ohhhhhhhh, the docking station is what I said. I told them to send me a limp along machine so I can WORK, but Dell doesn't do that for customers. So I will ship them my machine once more. They will replace the system board and I will blog to you again on January 9th about my machine crashing. I am calling them tonight again to see if it's possible to have them extend the warranty for a little longer to ensure this doesn't happen again. Probably have no luck, but it is worth a try.

The moral of the story is, stay away from the Inspiron 8600 and Latitude m60 (same board) if you plan to dock, because you will probably get a crappy machine and will only have it for 20 days of each month, but Dell won't care. You think after they replace the $700 system board twice, it might be cheaper to just send a new machine for the long haul.

watch out for Dell scaming their customers. They send a 2.50
check to you and you might think it's part of your rebate. A
couple months later you get a bill for 89.99 for some credit
card protection service-- slezy to make money off you and
run by their Dell financial services div.

got that same problem and i flashed the bios to version A12 to no avail.... i dont know what to do as well. i tried every possible scenario. the problem will only appear if im using just the battery. strange isn't it? the computer can boot to the desktop if im using an ac adapter or using a docking station with ac adapter.

The only thing that worked for me was a Motherboard replacement. Once done, I am only suggest cold-docking (no power when docked) from here on out.

is dell even aware of this issue? tech support of dell can not even determine what is the cause of this issue.

They treated it like they do everything. Does restarting fix it? No. Send it in and we will replace the hardware.

Uh oh.... I was just about to order a docking station for my newly acquired 8600 Inspiron.... and then I read these posts. Is this a seemingly universal problem with all 8600's?
Is this (the docking station) a move I should not make? I don't want to be sending this computer in for service every time I turn around! Anyone familiar with this problem.... please email me your thoughts at srh749@yahoo.com.
Thanks!

Read responses closely. It's a motherboard issue. Not a "dock" problem. Bios rev or reset does not fix it. This exact problem also happens on the Dell Latitude D800.

Motherboard replacement is needed. It does fix it. There is nothing in this thread which says a motherboard replacement fails.

same is happening to my 8600, will onky restart from standby,or hibernation, or reboot away from the docking station if I use the 90W dock adapter....ienot on battery or the 65W adapter.

has the problem been sorted for you.

my problem occured after updating the NVIDIA drivers from Dell and running Dell Quickset....p'haps a coincidence...have removed both thru control panel to no avail.

Adapter cable was chewed on by my cat. Rewired the adapter and the battery won't charge. Ordered a new adapter and the battery still won't charge. Called Dell support and gave up after 1.5 hours on hold. Anyone else with battery issues?

Hi

We have had 2 customers this month, both had a Dell Inspiron 8600 with exact problems (Battery does not charge at all and it does not start with just the charger) , I was going to suggest to them to buy a docking station so it might fix their problem but obviously they be wasting their money.

They have called DELL and they were asked to send the laptop to them + $120 just to look at it... Possibly they will sell them a new motherboard for what $200 or more + labor cost, god knows how much it will cost them at the end.

We use to recommend Dell products to our customers but last few weeks we have see too many dodgy dell products.... including printers and PC's.

We strongly recommend to people if they are buying dell they should pay the extra for the extended warranty its worth it at the end :)

Cheers

I have had my inspiron 8500 system board replaced three times in a 4 month period. I finally lost it and they sent me the 8600. Two months after receiving the 8600, I had to have the system board replaced again. I just want my money back.. I'm no computer geek, but I travel a lot and it was easier to keep my notes and inventory organized, but they have it, more that I do. I was smart enough to get the extended warranty, but the aggravation, outweighs the benefits..

My wife has had a similar problem with her 8600. A month ago (only weeks after warranty expired), while running it on AC, it just shut off, saying the battery was critically low... Looking at the adapter, she noticed the little green light was off indicating it wasn't drawing power. The machine wouldn't restart. She ordered a new adapter from Dell, and it worked for a month... then today the same thing happened. No power, no boot, no nothing. Has anyone achieved a permanent fix for this, preferably one that doesn't involve shipping the thing to Dell?

God do i ever hate Dell. I've also had battery problems with my Dell which I attributed to the AC adapter. Then after ordering three new ones (one actually melted) and still the same problem I decided to bring it to a repair shop (figured it might be the DC Jack on the motherboard which could be replaced for 50 bucks). Unfortunately the part could never be found and even if it could it would cost well over 600, or 800-1000 to replace the entire board. I've now been without my laptop for 6 weeks, don't ever buy a Dell, even with the extended warranty its not worth it.

Hey, I've had my 8600 since November 2003. It's weird because the problem I am facing is EXACTLY opposite of the one described by the original author.

Recently, when I boot up my computer (doesn't matter if it's a warm or cold boot, or reboot) the DELL screen appears, with the white POST progress bar. The progress bar seems to go to 100% and then it just stalls.

The computer makes no sounds, nothing. Pressing F2 for the BIOS setup does not work nor F12. This has happened nearly 30 times now, and the problem DOES NOT HAPPEN when the computer is NOT DOCKED. It only happens when it is docked in my Advanced Port Replicator. I have had the APR swapped already to no avail.

As well, on some occasions, it will boot past POST, and then the sometimes the WINDOWS splash screen will appear, and then the screen goes black, and only a white cursor at the top left of the screen appears, and it just hangs. I've left the computer on for half an hour, and nothing happens.

Currently I am getting my motherboard replaced. I hope it works. ANYONE else having the same problem??? Would love to hear if it's just me.

Anyways, here's my configuration:

Dell 8600
15.4" LCD +UXGA 1650x1050
Pentium M 1.7Ghz
2x512MB DDR RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5650go
60GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
NEC 4X DVD+RW
Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0
Secondary Monitor: Dell UltraSharp 2405fpw
External Hard Drive: Lacie 160GB d2 Triple Interface (Connected through Firewire 400 using 6-4pin cable)

Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

James

Well I just talked to Dell and it looks like I'm sending mine back as soon as my semester is over. I bought mine i 2003 so mine is in the same time frame as well. I really worried about this as I do a lot of traveling with my laptop. I can see a big battle bruing. This totally sux because I love the laptop, everything works great. Now I"m not sure if I should just sell it after they fix it since it seems to be a recurring problem.

Dell Latitude D800 - same issue as the original poster - will not boot without an AC adapter or docking station. In BIOS (A12), it says the docking state is UNDOCKED, yet when booting up, the system thinks it is still docked and running on batterries.

Even attaching the AC adapter doesn't get rid of all problems; once booted into XP (remember, this is off the docking station, running on 90W adapter), the integrated NIC will not connect to the network. Have to use a wireless card or PCCard NIC to connect. But connect to the docking station, and once again the NIC is operating.

Definitely something not right with the m/b. Shame too - worked great for a year, then this.

I work in IT, and Dell Support was terribly rude, treating me as if I was totally clueless about my system. Trying to contact corporate support instead.

Dell Inspiron 8500. I've got the same problem as well. The computer won't start without the AC adapter or the Docking station. I've previously had the same problem 2x within the last 5 months. The other times they sent a technician to replace the motherboard and then it work for 2-3 months before it broke again.

Now they say I should just carry my APR or power cord around. I explained to them that that was not the reason I bought a labtop. I bought a labtop so that I could use the computer without having to be plugged in all the time. So they said I had to buy a new battery because batteries aren't covered after 1 year. I explained that I didn't want to buy a new battery and have that not fix the problem but tech had no response to that.

Anybody find a fix that worked?

Hey people. I just spent half of my day on the phone with Dell, explaining what i think a lot of you are dealing with but probably don't even know. This might take awhile to explain but bear with me and read it, because it might be pertinent to your situation. READ ON>>>>>>>>>>>>

My girlfriend got an Inspiron 8600 in December of 2003. It ran fine for about 6-7 months at which time the AC Adapter went bad (DP/N: 5U092, 19.5V/3.34A/65W). I bought her a replacement on ebay, same part number (we probably could have gotten one under warranty, but oh well). She then realized after getting the replacement adapter that the battery would no longer charge, not only that but Windows didn't even recognize that a battery was there. So she pressed on without a battery, just plugging the adapter into the wall when she wanted to use the computer. 2 months after I bought her replacement adapter a drink was spilled into the keyboard, frying the system. Dell wanted $800 to fix it, she said screw that and came to accept a life without her laptop.

Fast forward until about 3 weeks ago, when I started pestering her about when she was getting her computer fixed. She didn't want to pay Dell $800, so I said "what the hell, I know a thing or 2 about computers, I will fix it for you" (figuring I could buy replacement parts on Ebay). So I started taking apart her computer, looking at the components, and this is when I made the BREAKTHROUGH!!!!!!!

I SUGGEST THAT ALL OF YOU WHO ARE HAVING ISSUES DO THIS: look at the bottom sticker, the one with the DELL logo, www.dell.com, FOR USE WITH ADAPTER PA-10 or PA-12. Look at the amperage requirement. The label on my girlfriend's computer says 4.62A. Her Inspiron 8600 requires 4.62A in order to properly function. A 4.62A requirement equates to 90W of power. Now compare the amperage rating on your computer to the Output amperage rating on your AC Adapter. The adapter that Dell shipped with this computer WAS ONLY 3.34A, and 65W. DELL SENT THE WRONG AC ADAPTER!!! This explains why the first adapter went bad, why the battery went bad, and probably why a lot of you are having the same problems. The adapter is not providing enough power to the computer, and in the meantime the computer is trying to pull that power from the adapter, straining it to the point of destruction.

If you have Dell Part Number 5U092, the 3.34A 65W adapter (the same one that came with my girlfriend's 8600), check your computer to see if it requires 4.62A (the 90W adapter). I found 2 Dell AC adapters that output 4.62A: P/N: 7W104 and P/N: 9T215. Maybe one of these adapters is what you need.

So after spending hours on the phone explaining the situation and escalating to supervisors and talking to complete idiots, I was able to score a new adapter, the CORRECT one (4.62A) AND a new battery. One major obstacle I encountered was that Dell Technical Support thinks the 3.34A adapter works with this model, even though it says right on the computer that it needs 4.62A. So whatever documentation the Dell Tech Support people have is wrong. There may be some Inspiron 8600s that only require 3.34A, but not mine.

I told the supervisor that this was a very serious issue, many people are experiencing this, and this is the kind of thing that results in class-action lawsuits. She said she would pass the information along to management, so cross your fingers for some sort of recall in the near future.

I encourage all of you having these adapter/battery/power issues to contact Dell and make a fuss. They need to know the severity of this situation. Not only that but they are telling some of you to replace the motherboard, etc. when in fact the whole thing could be solved simply by replacing the adapter.

Good luck, I'm interested to hear about some of your other experiences!

Having the problem of battery not charging for a long time now. After Darrin's comment on the power adapter, checked to find that there was mismatch in the power requirement of the adapter and the system.
Thanks Darrin.
I did call up the dell people, they refuse to accept the issue. The only solution they give is "Replace the motherboard". It seems like a slogan and a fix for all issues on 8600.
They should just recall the whole 8600 series, if it has basic problems like power supply mismatch. It is a beautiful system, I really like it, but issues as minor as power supply mismatch is a breach of trust from Dell.
The dell customer support also stated that they supplied the 3.34W power supply for the docking station. It seems like a ridiculous statement to make, since the monitor of the 8600 is really big compared to other laptops, why will someone use a docking station & monitor with 8600 ?
I am just out of the guarantee period, so I could not convience them to fix this issue in my system. I really hope that my system is not fried by the continous use of the wrong power supply.
The dell guys deserve to face a law suit ?

My company purchased an 8600 for me in early December. Within a week, the computer froze (no keyboard or mouse reaction); tried to reboot & it froze about 3 seconds into the XP Pro splash screen. Dell convinced me that XP was corrupt. Tried an XP repair with no luck. Tried a full reformat (bye bye to all of my data) & new XP install: still same lockup on boot. Dell sent a serviceman & replaced motherboard & hard disk. I spent the next day re-installing XP & ALL software. A week later, SAME lockup. I ranted & a new 8600 was sent to me. Yesterday (4 months later), SAME lockup / refusal to boot. Ran ALL diagnostics ... DELL tech support person suggested an XP repair: put in DELL CD-ROM & it all looked fine until "Starting Windows...", when the 8600 again froze. It is now on its way to the DELL shop. I am ready to scream at my company for something else.
Regarding the power supply, I have not had any of the mentioned problems. I have a docking station at home and it has worked fine (I like the mouse & parallel ports missing on the 8600). The power supplies are 65W (both the std one & the travelling one that works in the car / plane).
The computer is slow operating the software (takes time to switch between open programs) & the full-screen DVD playback shakes (will the new Nvidia driver help?).

My company purchased 3 8600s in December 2003 from Dell Outlet (refurbs) with the port replicators. In October 2004, one of the machines wouldn't boot with the port replicator or adapter - same error: "The computer is docked and only battery power is detected..." Fortunately, it was still under Dell's one-year warranty on refurbs. After sending it off to have the motherboard replaced, it's been fine (so far). Recently, the other 2 machines had the same problem. By my count, that's a 100% failure rate on these things. Since we're now outside our warranty, Dell offered to replace the motherboards for a minimum of $500 - interestingly, but not surprisingly, they also suggested I look at the prices on the *new* Dell Inspirons - "very competitive", the guy told me, "and maybe a better idea to just buy a new one". Yeah, RIGHT! After this experience, I plan on looking for another source for equipment for our company - understand that I've *only* bought Dell for this compnay since I was put in this position 7 years ago. This is clearly a defect - Dell should be issuing a recall and offer to replace motherboards on all of these machines they sold - they've done it in the past on the Inspiron 2650s.

Did someone mention a class-action suit? I'm in....

I got my 8600 a month back, and i really don't know whether to laugh or cry right now. Its the fastest notebook pc i've ever had. But it crashed on the first day it came out of the box. "No worries", i thought. "Just an obscure, once in the lifetime crash". How sadly mistaken i was. Till this day, it has locked up virtually every single day i've used to. This happens whenever i surf websites that (i deduced) either had some javascript or ActiveX script. Firefox, IE both crash equally well. I also had a traumatic time with Microsoft Word 2003. I could never type a single character in it before it locked up. By then i realized something was awfully amiss. One time, a BSOD told me my video drivers were causing the problem (i have a Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo... i have used their desktop counterparts with absolutely no problem at all). I ended up using a very old "A02" release.... and now MS Word boots up! (the newest release i can find is A04) its still not as stable as can be, but at least it works. Surfing the net still isn't that safe however. I sometimes quiver at the thought of having another lockup when i have to check my mail on gmail....

Called tech support regarding this driver issue, but the poor dude had absolutely no clue. Bless his heart. Considering the fact i'm a computer engineer, i think i stressed him out to the point he disappeared for about 7minutes only to appear more assertive, speaking like he knew what was going on... well, i gave him a rather logical lecture and he ended up saying i should try "repairing windows" again, which i did just this morning! maybe i should speak to his puppet masters one day... but i doubt they would ever even have a clue...

Since he was a decent and sincere fellow, i didn't roast him much. He'll be "researching" what he can about my issue and will get back to me tomorrow. I'll also be telling him of my "progress" tomorrow....

will keep ya' all updated...

There is a small button on 8600 battery which would show the life of the battery. Each light indicates that 20% of your battery is dead. If all 5 light up, your battery is a zombie!

At the risk of sounding like a Dell basher, I'd like to offer a little advice. I'm a PC and laptop tech. I worked for a consulting firm for several years where, among other things, I maintained the company’s fleet of laptop computers. I now operate my own small consulting business. Of all the different laptop brands I have maintained and serviced over the years, the only one that was truly reliable was the IBM Thinkpad. I really don't understand how Dell has achieved such a high level of consumer confidence. I suppose it's the marketing. They certainly haven't earned it through the sales of reliable laptops and good customer service. They have yet to do either.

I don't resell IBM products. I only want to pass along a little insight to those of you who are suffering with a bad laptop. When it's time to buy a new laptop, take a good look at the IBM Thinkpad X Series. They are a little more expensive than Dell, I'll admit that, but the up front cost is small compared to the aggravation you'll get if you try to save by buying a lesser machine.

In closing I want to make it clear that I have no desire to be part of any brand war, and I will not respond to anyone who attempts to draw me into one. I also would like to wish you all the best of luck with your current laptops. Thank you for reading. :-)

Actually each light that lights up is a good thing. All lights off indicates the battery is dead (else what is powering the lights?).

As to strange 8600 stuff, I have been looking at a Dell 8600 that belongs to a friend's son and discovered why his AC adapter is not powering his computer (or charhing the battery). Believe it or not the central pin inside the adapter end that plugs into the laptop is missing! I can't be sure until I cut it apart but it seems to have been pushed all the way inside the housing when he plugged it into the laptop - and thus can't get a reliable connection. It is not inside the laptop port (my first thought) as I have a D800 (same adapter - manufacturer part number 7W104) charger that plugs into it and now it charges!

To be fair to Dell, from reading the posts here (I am an engineer) their problems here are first buying an AC adapter from someone with (apparantly) poor QC (this part number keeps cropping up in complaints and I think it might have been recalled in England - didnt know they had same power as US so this rumor may be false) and also not being careful enough when shipping adaptors with differing power requirements (65W versus 95W is a heck of a lot of difference and could fry any loptop given enough time to do it). Hope this helps.

BTW, I would advise folks to be careful when looking for an aftermarket AC adapter replacement. I have more electronic devices than the normal person (three Dell laptops, a Dell Axim x50v PDA, and a cell phone next to right now - and I am on the road) and while the temptation to get one device to charge them all is great - please read the fine print before buying. For example, I use the new IGo Anywhere kit (does 120V, car, and airplane) that allows me to charge a laptop (most laptop tips included) and another device (PDA or cell) at one time. However, for the folks here you should be aware that the kit does NOT include the S20 tip for the Dell Inspiron 8600 or Dell Lattitude D800 (they are the same computer - really - lay them both next to each other and defy someone to figure out which is which - it shut up some Lattitude snobs at work). More importantly, the S20 tip when connected to any IGo adapter will NOT charge your battery - it will only power the laptop. Basically, these laptops require too much juice (95W vs 65W remember?). Its this same issue (higher juice requirement) that is causing IGo to NOT make a PDA adapter tip for the Dell Axim x50v I have (the VGA sucks it up). So....while I still gain some weight savings when traveling with the IGo (my other Dell laptops and my cell phone), I am not sure I would have gotten it ($130) if I had known in advance it would not be that much help with the D800 and the PDA. Cavet Emptor and Cheers. PS - sorry for the spelling typos earlier.

Interesting to hear. So far nobody could tell me why my inspirion 8600 just starts with the Ac power and the battery won´t charge. I bought a new battery since I was told the Battery got sour...Same problem. Thanks for the news.

Have any of you who are experiencing problems with docking updated to the new firmware (A13). From A09 onwards there appear to have been many changes to docking features/fixes

Has anyone seen this issue, my dell 8600 started acting weird about a month ago. I had to hit the power button multiple times to start the computer. What would happen is that I would hit the power button and like 10 seconds later the 8600 would start. Yesterday I tried to turn it on, and now the laptop won't start at all. Plugging in the power cord I see no lights, nothing... could it be the infamous motherboard? This is the second time we have had this laptop breakdown on us. About 9 months ago they replaced the hard drive and the dvd-drive... it's crap! Anyways if any one has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Everyone having trouble with your batteries charging please read Darrin's comments from 4/30. He is right on the money. I have an Inspiron 8600 that stopped charging the battery. I bought a new battery and a new power supply. The problem persisted. I called Dell tech support and they said I would need to replace the motherboard. The motherboard needs to be able to detect the type of AC adapter being used in order to charge the battery. After reading Darrin's comments, I realized that he may be on to something. The label on the laptop said it required more power than the AC adapter could provide. Even though it seemed to work fine in the beginning and still ran fine when powered with the wrong adapter. I decided to purchase a 90W power supply (PN 7W104). It cost me $40 on ebay. Now everything works great! The battery charges when plugged into the adapter! If you are having the same problems, it is worth a shot for $40 to try it out. Good luck.

I have had a Dell Inspiron 8600 since February. It works fine if I don't dock it. Most of the time when I dock it, it fails to recognize my external keyboard. It also gives me shocks and has emitted a solid string of beeps upon being booted (until turned off). Dell has replaced the motherboard twice, the hard drive once (fried by the shocks, I suspect), and the docking station twice. It still has all the same problems. I'm still using the computer I bought it to replace. Dell technical support has been extremely polite, but extremely ineffective, too. I am about ready to throw the machine out and buy something that docks and works at the same time.

During purchase you have a choice of a 65w or 90w power adapter. Not so much a 'they sent you the wrong power adapter' - just they wanted you to pay more for the right one ;) btw, i thought i'd share that my IMB/HITACHI deathstar harddrive (60gig) died after ony 11 months. So all you 8600 users watch out. (and of course, keep regular backups).

I replaced my hard drive in my Inspiron 8600 12 months and two weeks after I got the computer. The PC was never dropped or bumped.

Dell support is worthless. The Dell people who worked on my laptop said they replaced the graphics card and Monitor, but they couldn't fine any problems with the system? Gee it will not boot? ….and they couldn’t find the problem………

I also have a Dell Inspiron 8600. I do not have the "dock" but my system does not boot on the first try. Dell replaced the graphics card & monitor but it was still a problem. This 8600 also doesn’t like to shut down at times. I can go through the start menu and click “shut down”, or “restart” all I like but it just will not shut down. This is also a problem with a Dell Dimension 8250 I was given when a friend died. I also know five people at my college of VCU who own Dell computers both desktop and laptops that often will not boot or shut down correctly.

Then right after the warranty ran out the hard drive took a crap and died. I replaced the hard drive myself and the system worked fine for a spell. My Inspiron 8600 is not a bad PC when it works. It has never been dropped. It is like new, I do not use it much as it was only for trips since I have six desktop PC’s at home. The rubber “nubs” are always falling off as well. Nothing real big there but it is a bother replacing them all the time. It is also odd that the Inspiron is faster than the Dimension 8250. The Dimension 8250 has 1GB of memory and the Inspiron 8600 has only 384MB.

> Note: Even while plugged in the Inspiron 8600 will shut down out of the blue.

I have a Dell Dimension 8250 and it will not turn off. I found this blog with Google looking for "Dell Computers Sux" I see that another has this problem. Is there a fix? Dell support is clueless and I am out of warranty.

>> Sorry guy, you are in the same boat as the rest of us who own a Dell PC. Laptops & Desktops made by Dell do not seem to hold up much past the seventh month. Most I know with a Dell laptop have had to replace the hard drive 12 or 13 months after getting it.

RE: manjunatha - "i do have Dell 8600, but the problem i am facing is it gets overheated in "memory module cover" , dell support people only know to put customer on hold for hours. dose any one facing same problem."

>> I had problems with my Inspiron 8600 getting too hot right after I got it back from Dell when they said they fixed the graphics card. I removed the cooling fan on the bottom and found it was not working. I found a broken Dell Inspiron 8600 another college student got fed up with and tossed in the trash and used the fan from that to fix mine. I am trying to order a new fan from dell with no luck. My Inspiron is now 14 months old and well taken care of. This Insprion is not used much. I have only about 2 to four monts of use on it as I own seven desktops at home.

Note: I build computers on my own. I have five Inspirons here I am fixing for other college students after they couldn't get Dell to fix them. Three dell sent them new Motherboards and told them to put them in. So they gave me the laptops to get fixed. dell support is no help. Even if you send in your laptop, like mine, the problem is not always fixed.

My Inspiron 8600 works with AC adapter (even with only battery) but the battery doesn't charge. I think the problem must be in the central PIN (DATA do not comunicate.)

I have my Inspiron 8500 for 2 years now and just experienced the same problem. It wouldnt start at all. Local PC guy suggested motherboard... Yeah you can buy one for about $600. Thats just perfect...
What a shame, because it was great machine, I played games all the time and did my online business. Now I am another pissed of dell customer. Out of warranty, $2000 in Micheal Dell's pocket, with no working laptop.
When I called support, I couldnt understand the guy - thick indian accent. Good work Dell - really nice scam.

I am yet another unhappy Dell customer. I recently purchased (2) 8600's and received one with a bad touch pad. Dell sent a replacement part but the replacement part did not have the OS and CPU decals on it. I contacted Dell and they jerked me around until I finally file with the BBB & AG's office (2 months, long enough I could not return it). Dell contacted me and stated the warranty does not cover cosmetic parts, so what eles is not covered. You buy a new laptop and have immediate trouble and the replacement parts are not even complete. The laptop looks used and naked now and Dell thinks this is acceptable for a new machine still under warranty. Glad I did not buy the extended warranty, can't wait until parts run low and they start shipping scratched and cosmetically damaged parts. I bet then we will hear others complain. Dell support went from saying yes to no to yes to I'll send a replacement with them installed to thet are no longer available to we just won't ship them to you.

Another note: since the complaint Dell cancelled my pending order and retracted my discount (concession) coupons. Very childish and goes against their own code of conduct. - Thank Dell

Dell - Never Again.. Save your money and frustration, do not buy Dell... Good bye Dell!

Class action? Count me in.

I contacted Dell and the told me it was a hardware problem...the motherboard needs replaced. Anyone else have this problem

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 ( two years old) and the Dell Distributor here in the Philippines has diagnosed that it needs a new mother board. The laptop is out of warranty, hence the quotation to replace the motherboard is 50,000 Philippine Pesos ( about $US 895 ) Can any one put me in the direction for a cheaper motherboard, because at that cost, I could almost buy another Laptop. Thanks..

For the S20 IGO adapter and the dell -- will it power the battery when the laptop is turned off and plugged into the IGO? Or does it not matter?
Thanks.

Hmmm, I am in trouble like most of you. My Inspiron 8600 won't power up and called support to explain the issue along with the 4.62 A vs 3.34 A mis-match. But, they claim that it should work fine even with the mis-match. I am out of warranty and am close to trashing it or I have to spend more than $600 to replace the motherboard and hope it works, which is highly doubtful!

I might as well buy a new one and the support guy concurred with me. It's less than 2 years old and the laptop is broke completely.

Should have got the extended warranty but didn't. Now, I have to start looking at some HP or Lenova latops as they are more reliable - I have been using them at work and working fine without any issues.

Ohhhhhhhhh, I am going crazzzzzzy now!!!

I am the unfortunate owner of a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with the advanced port replicator. The computer never worked right from the day I got it but Dell stalled for the 21 day return policy. The issues include no icons on start up or restart in the docking station. I tracked it down to what USB port for the mouse was in use and was able to limp along by unplugging the mouse when booting up. After many, many days of calling Dell and getting the run around they wanted me to reformate the computer. When that didn't work they had me send it back to replace the motherboard which only made the problems worse. All I want is my money back. Stay away from Dell unless you are into bamboo shoots under your fingernails!
